Warriors to Think Pink this weekend against Knights

February 11, 2008

Corban and Warner Pacific will meet this weekend, as both teams will be attempting to heighten breast cancer awareness as part of the WBCA's Think Pink event.

SALEM, Ore. – Ninth-year head coach Terry Williams and the Corban College women’s basketball team will take time this weekend to heighten breast cancer awareness, as the Warriors host Think Pink Night against fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Warner Pacific College.

The Warriors and Knights will tip off on Friday, February 15th, beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center with all players wearing pink shoes laces, while coaches will be wearing pink ribbons.

The Think Pink initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The week set aside for this year's initiative is February 8 - 17, however many teams are participating outside of that window due to scheduling conflicts.

The WBCA was founded in 1981 and is to promote women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport of women's basketball and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.

"We are honored to be one of nearly 1,000 schools in the country to be taking this time to help people learn more about the number one killing disease among women,” said Williams. “It is nice to partner with Coach (Katy) Steding and the Knights in helping make people aware of breast cancer."

The athletic department staff and Associated Student Body (ASB) will partner with the Warrior women’s basketball team in helping heighten breast cancer awareness. The athletic staff, including the workers at the scorer’s table, will be wearing pink t-shirts that include the Think Pink logo. Meanwhile, ASB will be handing out 50 Think Pink t-shirts at the gate prior to the game.

All fans that wear pink will have $2.00 of their gate entry fee donated to the American Cancer Society, while pink wrist bands and buttons will be available along with information about breast cancer to all fans.

Corban is one of 12 Northwest schools that will be participating in the event, including fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Eastern Oregon and The College of Idaho. The aforementioned schools ran their event last weekend, as Eastern Oregon heightened awareness on Friday, February 8th, and The College of Idaho ran its event on Saturday, February 9th, when the Lady ‘Yotes hosted Concordia.
