SALEM, Ore. – Junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) scored a game-high 19 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban’s women’s basketball team dropped a critical game to the NAIA’s No. 23-ranked Warner Pacific, 77-70, on Saturday night.
Schaumburg was 1 of 4 Warriors in double figures, as junior Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.), junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.), and sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) combined to score 32 points. Carras poured in 12 points and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds, while Wilson registered 10 points and 7 rebounds. Steigleman scored 10 points in 18 minutes of play before fouling out late in the second half.
Corban (22-6 overall, 12-4 CCC) trailed by 7 (43-36) at halftime, but came out and used a 16-6 run to take a 52-49 lead with 12:05 left. Each team traded baskets over the next few minutes before Warner Pacific began whittling away at the lead. In the final two minutes, Corban was called for two intentional fouls that awarded the Knights two free throws plus the ball and put the game on ice.
The Warriors shot 24-for-55 (43.6%) from the field, but had a season-low 7.1% (1-for-14) from beyond the arc. Corban connected on 21-of-22 (95.5%) free throws, but could not break down a hard-nosed Knight defense that forced 15 turnovers and turned them into 19 points.
Warner Pacific (19-7 overall, 14-2 CCC) was led by Angie Sun’s 16 points, while Amber Stevens and Nicole Brown chipped in with 15 points each. Becky VanTine grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Warner Pacific, including 4 offensive rebounds. The Knights shot 27-for-56 (48.2%) from the field, including 20-for-29 (69.0%) from the free throw line.
The Warriors are next in action on Friday, February 17th, when they travel south to Klamath Falls for a match up with Oregon Institute of Technology beginning at 5:30 p.m. Corban has locked up a home playoff game, but must defeat the Hustlin’ Owls in order to secure the number two seed for the CCC post-season tournament.
The game will be carried live on KWBX 90.3 and thanks to the college’s partnership with Stretch Internet those fans that are outside the coverage area of the Salem-based radio station can hear the game live on the Internet.
