Freshman Emily Kindle recorded her second double-double of her collegiate career with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds against the Geoducks. |
OLYMPIA, Wash. – Freshman Emily Kindle (Stayton, Ore.) recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points on 6-for-11 from the field and a game-high 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) No. 26-ranked Corban women’s basketball team was upset, 52-45, by the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Saturday night.
Prior to tonight’s game, Corban had won the past sixteen meetings between the two institutions, including an earlier 81-68 victory over Evergreen. On this night, the Warriors’ downfall came thanks to a season-low 15-for-58 (25.9%) from the field en route to a season-low 45 points.
Fortunately, the Warriors (21-5 overall, 11-3 CCC) got a helping hand from Eastern Oregon tonight, as the Mountaineers defeated conference leader Warner Pacific, 78-57, and still sit one game behind the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Knights. The Warriors and Knights will meet in a much anticipated rematch one week from tonight inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Both Corban and Evergreen came out with great intensity, keeping the score within a few points for the entire first half. The host Geoducks held a slight 2-point lead (24-22) at halftime and built that lead to as many as 11 with 8:00 left. The Warriors slowly crept back, but were unable to break a 4-point margin and had to begin fouling when the clock began to dwindle, which allowed Evergreen ample opportunities at the free throw line.
Junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) added 13 points for the Warriors. Corban controlled the defensive end of the floor recording 11 steals, including a game-high 4 by junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.), but could not covert the Geoducks’ miscues into points.
Evergreen shot 17-for-46 (37.0%) from the floor and was led by Rachel Ross’ game-high 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Dalia Gomez added 10 points.
The Warriors are next in action on Friday, February 10th, when they host the Thunderbirds of Cascade beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
