Miller scores career-high in loss to Beacons of Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) scored a career and team-high 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, but Corban's women's basketball team dropped a conference match up with the Beacons of Northwest Christian, 59-51, Friday inside the Morse Event Center.
After being held scoreless over the game's opening twenty minutes, Miller erupted for all of her points in the second half to eclipse an early career-high of 14 points versus Southern Oregon on January 4th.
Along with Miller's performance off the bench, junior Tami Lambrecht (Sunnyside, Wash.) and senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 13 and 11 points respectively. Lambrecht scored eight of her 13 points in the first half before handing the reigns over to Miller during the final stanza.
After the opening twenty minutes, neither team gained an advantage as the half time score was knotted at 26-all. Corban's largest lead came with 4:50 remaining at 26-19 following a jumper by Steigleman, as Northwest Christian could not grab more than a four-point advantage on two seperate occasions with the final one coming at 11-7 after the opening 5:31.
In the second half, the host Beacons used a 16-2 run over the opening 6:38 to gain a 14-point lead (42-28) following a jumper by Elise Gray. Corban battled back and got within four points (45-41) thanks to a 13-3 run over a span of 4:52 book ended by a jumper from Lambrecht and a three-pointer by Miller with 7:30 remaining in the game. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Northwest Christian quickly extended its lead back to double digits with an 8-2 run of its own over a span of 3:21 spearheaded by a lay-up by McKenzie Gambee with 4:09 showing on the clock. Over the game's final four-plus minutes, the host Beacons shot 4-for-6 at the free throw line compared to Corban's 3-for-7 showing from the field that included a 1-for-4 performance from beyond the arc.
Besides the scoring of the aforementioned trio, junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) and sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) added five and four points respectively. On the boards, Goette led all players with a career, season, and game-high 16 rebounds that included four offensive boards. Meanwhile, Steigleman and Connell aided Goette's rebounding performance with six boards each.
Northwest Christian was led by Gambee, who scored a game-high 20 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field to go along with a pair of perfect 1-for-1 performances from beyond the arc and at the free throw line. Along with Gambee, Amy Croll and Lori Renner added 13 and 12 points respectively while Gambee pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Beacons.
As a team, Corban shot 20-for-60 (33.3%) from the field including 6-for-21 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line and 5-for-13 (38.5%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Northwest Christian was 21-for-52 (40.4%) from the field that included performances of 3-for-12 (25.0%) from beyond the arc and 14-for-20 (70.0%) from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 7-15 overall, 3-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian pushed its winning streak to three games and improves to 11-10 overall, 5-6 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Friday, February 1st, when Corban hosts Northwest beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
