PORTLAND, Ore. – Thanks to a game-high 22 points by senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), Corban's women's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 63-50 victory over conference rival Concordia Tuesday inside Cavalier Gymnasium.
Having not tasted the sweetness of victory in over a month, Corban exacted revenge on the host Cavaliers of Concordia following an earlier 58-57 loss on January 8th in Salem.
Along with Steigleman, sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) and junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) added 18 and 8 points respectively. Meanwhile, freshman Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) tied a career-high in assists with nine.
Neither team could crack the scoreboard for the first 2:01 until Goette connected on back-to-back free throws for the game's opening points. Following back-to-back lay-ups by Concordia's Haley Roth and Joyce Oniah, Steigleman tied the game for the second and final time via a jumper with 15:14 remaining in the opening half. After another jumper by Goette with 14:49 left, Corban grabbed a slim two-point lead (6-4) and never looked back while increasing its lead to as much as 13 points (33-20) following a jumper by Steigleman with 45 seconds to go in the opening stanza.
In the second half, the visiting Warriors built their lead to as much as 19 points (52-33) with 8:26 to go in the game as Goette connected on an old-fashion three-point play. Unlike its earlier contest with Concordia, Corban did not go cold and allow the Cavaliers back in the game. Concordia did however get within seven points (55-48) with 3:20 left on the clock, as the host Cavaliers used a 15-3 run over a span of 5:06 only to have Corban go 4-for-6 at the free throw line over the game's final 2:20 en route to securing the much-needed 13-point victory (63-50).
Besides the scoring of the aforementioned trio, Bostwick added six points and freshman Katie Stewart (Eugene, Ore.) scored four points off the bench. Steigleman aided Harter's efforts on the boards with nine rebounds, while senior Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) and Goette grabbed four boards each.
Concordia was led by Danielle Clauson, who scored a team-high 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting from the field to go along with a perfect performance of 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Along with Clauson, Oniah and Denise Benedict added eight and seven points respectively while Clauson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 23-for-53 (43.4%) from the field including 3-for-16 (18.8%) from behind the three-point line and 14-for-22 (63.6%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 17-for-56 (30.4%) from the field that included performances of 1-for-12 (8.3%) from beyond the arc and 15-for-18 (83.3%) from the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban improves to 7-14 overall, 3-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia falls to 11-10 overall, 7-4 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Friday, January 25th, when Corban travels south to Eugene to take on first-year conference member Northwest Christian beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center.
