Warrior winning streak halted by Knights of Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. – Juniors Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) and Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) led the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) No. 16-ranked Corban women’s basketball team with 15 points each despite a tough loss to Warner Pacific, 79-68, on Saturday night in a battle for first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.

The junior duo combined to shoot 13-for-24 (54.2%) from the field, as Carras was 7-for-10 and Wilson was 6-for-14.  Carras also grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds, while Wilson pulled down 4 rebounds and handed out 2 assists before both players fouled out late in the second half.

Along with the two juniors, sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Jessi Schaumburg (Redmond, Ore.) added 13 and 10 points, while Schaumburg led all players with 7 assists.

Corban found themselves down by 4 points (43-39) at halftime, as each team shot over 40.0% from the field.  The host Knights were 5-for-10 from behind the 3-point line in the first half, while Corban went 0-for-3 from long distance.

Over the final twenty minutes, Corban was outscored by 5 points (36-29), as Warner Pacific connected on 13-out-of-17 free throws compared to the Warriors’ 4-out-of-7 en route to the final 9-point margin.

Overall, Corban shot 27-for-66 (40.9%) from the field, while Warner Pacific shot 26-for-57 (45.6%).  The home team was 21-for-30 (70.0%) from the free throw line, while the Warriors were 13-for-17 (76.5%).

Becky VanTine led all players with 22 points for Warner Pacific, while Amber Stevens, Jacque Barton, and Nicole Brown added 12, 11, and 11 points respectively.  Stevens and Amber Walsh grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds each, while VanTine and Silver Pierce pulled down 7 and 5 rebounds respectively.

With the loss, Corban falls to 16-4 overall, 7-2 in CCC play.  Warner Pacific improves to 13-5 overall, 8-1 in CCC play.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, January 20th, when they host the Lady ‘Yotes of Albertson College of Idaho beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
