Warriors lead wire-to-wire in win over Thunderbirds

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) No. 16-ranked Corban women’s basketball team to a 67-53 win over conference member Cascade on Friday night, as she scored a team-high 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field.
The 5-foot-10 Churchill High School graduate scored the Warriors’ first 7 points of the game and first 4 points of the second half, as Corban led the entire game en route to winning their fifth straight game and 14 of their last 16 games.
Along with Steigleman, junior Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.) and senior Erin Plotts (Mill City, Ore.) were the only other Warriors in double figures with 14 and 10 points. Carras led Corban with 7 rebounds, while junior Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) and sophomore Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) grabbed 6 and 5 rebounds respectively.
Corban jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, shot 47.4% (18-for-38) from the field in the first half, and went into halftime with a comfortable 40-27 lead. In the second half, the Warriors extended their lead to as much as 20 points before holding on for the 14-point win, as they outscored the host Thunderbirds by 1 point (27-26) over the final twenty minutes.
Corban shot 30-for-67 (44.8%) from the field, while Cascade shot 18-for-45 (40.0%). The Warriors controlled the boards, as they pulled down 36 rebounds, including 18 offensive boards, compared to Cascade’s 30 rebounds, including 21 defensive boards.
Kristin Woller led all players with 18 points for Cascade, while Jubilee Cristel and Jamie Martinez added 16 and 11 points. Cristel led the Thunderbirds with a game-high 8 rebounds, while three other Cascade players grabbed 4 rebounds each.
With the win, Corban improves to 16-3 overall, 7-1 in CCC play. Cascade falls to 1-17 overall, 0-8 in CCC play. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, January 14th, when they travel to Portland for a 5:30 p.m. match up with conference co-leader Warner Pacific.
