History made despite loss to Knights of Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a team-high 19 points and in the process became the all-time leading scorer in Warrior history, but Corban's women's basketball team fell to the Knights of Warner Pacific, 55-48, Saturday inside the C.C. Perry Gym.

Heading into tonight's contest, Steigleman needed a mere four points to become the Warriors' all-time leading scorer surpassing Christy Nordstrom (1993-97) who scored 1,502 points during her career. With a pair of free throws and a made field goal within the game's opening eight minutes, the 5-foot-10 forward scored the 1,503rd point of her illustrious career and became the Warriors' all-time leading point scorer. Steigleman has totaled 1,517 points to date and joins Nordstrom as the lone pair of Warriors to score 1,500-or-more points in a career.

Despite the history-making moment, Corban blew a double-digit lead for the second time in its past three games as the Warriors grabbed a 12-point advantage (41-29) with eight minutes remaining. Over the next 3:41, the host Knights used a 13-0 run to take a slim one-point lead (42-41) following back-to-back made free throws by Warner Pacific's Lindsey Wells.

Each team traded basket over the next 2:21 before Corban grabbed its final lead of the night (47-46) following a made free throw by sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.). The host Knights used a 9-1 run over the final two-plus minutes of the game en route to securing the seven-point win (55-48) and handing Corban its seventh straight loss.

Along with Steigleman's performance, Goette and freshman Katie Stewart (Eugene, Ore.) added 12 and 5 points respectively. Steigleman added a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her point total, while Goette and Stewart pulled down seven and five boards respectively.

Warner Pacific was led by Jacque Barton, who scored a game-high 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field to go along with a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line. Along with Barton, Wells and Danica Wilson added 11 and 8 points respectively. Barton also led the Knights with a team-high six rebounds, while Wells and Wilson pulled down five boards each.

As a team, Corban shot 20-for-56 (35.7%) from the field including 2-for-15 (13.3%) from behind the three-point line and a 6-for-12 (50.0%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was 19-for-51 (37.3%) from the field that included performances of 3-for-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc and 14-for-28 (50.0%) from the charity stripe.

With the loss, Corban falls to 6-12 overall, 2-6 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific improves to 5-12 overall, 3-5 in CCC action.  The Warriors will return to the floor on Friday, January 18th, when Corban host the nationally-ranked Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
