Starting five scores in double figures in win over Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. -
The entire Warrior starting five scored in double figures led by senior Jessi Norton's (Redmond, Ore.) game-high 19 point on 7-for-19 shooting from the field, as Corban's women's basketball team defeated the Eagles of Northwest, 90-61, on Saturday.
Following a fight to the finish twenty-four hours earlier against The Evergreen State College, Corban found themselves down quickly (4-0) after the first 1:24, but used a 6-2 run over a span of 1:56 to knot the game at 6-all. Northwest then scored four straight points to make the score 10-6, before the visiting Warriors made a 9-0 run in less than a minute to take a 15-10 lead and never looked back from there.
The Warriors largest lead of the opening half came with 1:25 remaining (41-26) following a jumper by Norton. Corban grabs its second 15-point lead (43-28) with 23 seconds to go in the opening stanza when senior Kendall Dionne (Brownsville, Ore.) hit a pair of free throws to cap the first half scoring.
In the second half, Corban continued to apply the pressure as the Warriors built their lead to as much as 32 (70-32) in the opening ten minutes thanks to a 3-point bucket by Dionne. Freshman Hillary Sell (Aloha, Ore.) gave Corban its second 32-point lead (72-40) with back-to-back free throws with 9:02 remaining in the game. The Warriors' largest lead of the game came less than four minutes later when Dionne canned her third and final 3-pointer of the night giving the visiting squad a commanding 79-46 advantage with 5:36 left. The host Eagles could not get any closer than 26 points (85-59) with 1:22 remaining before Corban capped its scoring via a 3-pointer by sophomore Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) with 22 seconds left in the contest.
Along with Norton's game-high in points, junior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) added 17 points and game-high 11 rebounds (8 offensive, 3 defensive). Seniors Dionne, Brianne Carras (Olympia, Wash.), and Tosha Wilson (Madras, Ore.) added 14, 15, and 10 points respectively, while Carras aided the rebounding effort with 9 boards and Wilson dished out a game-high 6 assists.
As a team, Corban shot 34-for-76 (44.7%) from the field, including 16-for-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Northwest shot 24-for-61 (39.3%) from the field, including 8-for-10 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.
Northwest was led by Rachel Travis' team-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from field, while Brittany Marshall and Brittany Bowsher added 11 and 8 points respectively. Sam McCracken pulled down a team-best 7 rebounds for the host Eagles, while Jasmine Yeldon and Dani Drivsten each grabbed 4 boards.
With its third straight win and eighth victory in its last nine games, Corban improves to 13-5 overall, 5-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest falls to 8-12 overall, 3-5 in CCC action. The Warriors will play their lone home games of January beginning next Friday, January 12th, when they host the Thunderbirds of Cascade beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. |
