Warrior Golf Classic Successful Again, Proceeds Record Broken for third straight year

For the first time in three years, 116 golfers played under completely clear skies participating in the 12th Annual Warrior Golf Classic on June 11th at Salem’s Creekside Golf Club. The primary fundraiser for Corban's Athletics Department, the tournament reached its goal of $30,000-plus in net proceeds, which surpassed last year's mark to set another record amount.

Golfers and volunteers enjoyed a BBQ lunch before positioning for the tourney’s shotgun start. After the final putt had dropped, the overall tournament winners were...

Gross Score - Steve Tatone, Jason Beyrouty, Rick McCloskey, and T.J. Sullivan (53)
Net Score - Terry Williams, Nelson Zarfas, Jeff Dunn, and Olie Johansen (44.5)

Several golfers were recognized for the longest drives or putts on several holes. The tournament's coordinator and Director of Athletics John Nelson presented the awards at the post-tourney dinner. He offered gratitude and high praise to the many sponsors and volunteers.

“We can’t do this tournament without the wonderful support of our title sponsor, Aramark and Bethany Bigelow,” Nelson said.  “Bethany and her staff helped make our tournament another great success. Special thanks also goes to Olie Johansen and Salem Nissan, who sponsored the tournament shirts, and Steve Tatone of Aldrich, Kilbride, & Tatone, for sponsoring the carts.”

The 2nd High Gross was turned in by the team of Matt Williams, Jim Alfano, Jay Milton, and Jeff Morgan (55), while the 3rd High Gross went to the team of Steve Rodine, Gib Stephens, Curtis Tucker, and Ron Wolfe (58).

The 2nd High Net was carted by Justin Sherwood, Brad Crosby, Eric Fiegi, and Bill Martin (48.4), while the 3rd High Net went to the team of Buddy Puckett, Justin Greene, Ryan Dempster, and Bryce Bernard (48.8).

The not-so coveted High Gross was shared by a pair of foursomes, as the team of Reno Hoff, Bill Ryals, Rod Malone, and Jason Klohk (75) tied with the team of Frank Bain, Doug Bain, Mark Bain, and Josh Bain (75). The tie-breaker went to the team captained by Corban president, Dr. Reno Hoff, as the tournament committee began working backwards hole-by-hole starting with the 18th hole.

The two pre-tournament contest winners were Steve Rodine (chipping) and Ron Wolfe (putting). Both contests went to a playoff, as Rodine put his chip to six inches and Wolfe rolled his putt to within one-and-a-half inches of the hole. Dave Johnson finished as the runner-up in the putting contest thanks to a putt to 14 inches of the cup, while Tony Holstein was the runner-up in the chipping contest with a performance of eight-and-a-half inches.

Nelson told the dinner crowd that the tournament’s success is due to the dedicated hard work of tournament organizers and team of volunteers. “Once again everyone did an amazing job of organizing this event. We had the right people in the right places to make this tournament another big success.”
