Warriors begin final weekend with loss to The Evergreen State College

November 4, 2005

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Going into the final weekend of the season, Corban’s women’s volleyball team knew that they needed to sweep their two Washington opponents in order to secure the final spot in the conference playoffs and continue their consecutive post-season appearances.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, they were handed a 3-0 (27-30, 26-30, 26-30) loss by the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Friday night, which ended all hopes of making their ninth straight conference tournament.

A quick glance at the final statistics showed that the match was not pretty, as neither team had a player record double-digit kills and both teams hit below 11.0% in the attack category.

Senior Bailey Willcox (Jackson, Wyo.) -- pictured right -- led Corban with a match-high 8 kills, while fellow senior Katie Lewin (Keizer, Ore.) and junior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) each added 6.

Junior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) was the lone bright spot of the match, as she recorded a match-high 13 digs to raise her season total to 483.  Heading into the final match of the season – against nationally-ranked Northwest – the 5-foot-6 Reynolds High School graduate is 35 digs away from tying former Warrior Kim Segrin for 2nd on the all-time single season digs chart.  Earlier this season, Horn registered a match-high 30 digs against the Eagles in a 4-game loss at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Besides the performance of Corban’s back row general, senior setters Ashley Walbridge (Troutdale, Ore.) and Whitney DeWolf (Central Point, Ore.) combined for 23 assists – 14 for Walbridge and 9 for DeWolf – as they guided the Warriors’ offense over the 3 games.

Emily Peterson and Stephanie Cameron led Evergreen with a match-high 8 kills each, while Elyse Johnston and Mattie Blevens recorded 5 and 4 respectively.  Chelsea Jacobson guided the Geoducks’ offense with a match-high 23 assists, while Jesseka Bethke anchored Evergreen’s back line with a team-high 12 digs.

With the loss, Corban falls to 6-15 overall, 6-11 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Evergreen improves to 5-16 overall, 5-16 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors conclude their season on Saturday, November 5th, when they travel to Kirkland, Wash., for a match-up with the NAIA’s No. 13-ranked Northwest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
