SALEM, Ore. – Senior Hallie Hofferd (Bend, Ore.) hammered a match and career-high 22 kills, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell in five games (30-18, 30-22, 29-31, 31-33, 13-15) to the Cavaliers of Concordia on "Senior Recognition Night."
After registering a match-high .354 hitting percentage thanks to 20 kills and a mere 3 attack errors in the opening game, Corban attempted to repeat that performance with 16 kills and 7 hitting errors in the second game. Thanks to a combined 36 kills with just 10 hitting errors over the first two games, the Warriors grabbed what seemed to be an insurmountable 2-games-to-none lead (30-18 & 30-22).
Unfortunately for Corban the match does not end when one team gets to two games. Over the next two games, neither team peppered the floor with massive attacks rather timely hitting led to a pair of amazing games that Concordia took by a combined 4 points (31-29 & 33-31) to force a fifth and deciding game.
In the fifth and final game, the visiting Cavaliers took an 11-4 advantage right out of the gate. With a somewhat deflated look on their faces, Corban battled back behind the serving of Hofferd to get within a point (14-13), but could not continue the momentum and had the match ended on a Kristin Gunderson kill.
Along with Hofferd, senior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.), junior Ashley Lange (Salem, Ore.), and sophomore Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) chipped in with 15, 13, and 11 kills respectively. Freshman setter Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) handed out a match and career-high 64 assists, which is the most this season and the best single-match performance since former Warrior Ashley Walbridge handed out 63 assist versus Warner Pacific on October 8, 2005.
Sophomore Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) anchored Corban's back line with a match-high 27 digs, while Hofferd and Clanton pitched in with 17 and 14 respectively. Senior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) recorded 26 digs from the back line to move into sole possession of 3rd all-time in career digs with 1,145. Horn also eclipsed her own record for digs per game with an average of 6.87 during her final season donning a Warrior uniform.
In their final match as a Warrior, the senior trio of Hofferd, Clanton, and Horn combined for 37 kills, 1 assist, 5 service aces, 57 digs, and 9 blocks (4 solo, 5 assist).
Concordia was led by Erin Murphy's team-high 21 kills, while Mariana Toscano and Katie Shelby added 15 and 12 respectively. Andrea Brandt handed out 60 assists for the Cavaliers, while Rachel Cotter provided the defense for Concordia with a team-best 24 digs.
Corban ends its season at 7-18 overall, 4-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 12-13 overall, 10-8 in CCC action.
