SALEM, Ore. – Sophomores Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) and Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) paced the Warrior attack with 11 kills each, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell in three games (21-30, 24-30, 27-30) to the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech on Saturday.
In the opening game, Corban fell behind quickly and were trailing by 11 (20-9) before mounting a comeback that saw them get as close as 8 (28-20) following a kill by McGraw. Unfortunately, the Warriors could not continue the comeback and were halted by a Krista Wooley kill that ended the opening game and gave the visiting Hustlin' Owls the earlier lead thanks to a 9-point win (30-21).
In the middle game, both teams recorded their highest kill total of the match with Oregon Tech registering 20 and Corban 16. The game was tied at 15-all following a kill by junior Ashley Lange (Salem, Ore.), but Oregon Tech went on a mini-three point run with a kill from Megan Albertson and a pair by Wooley. From that point on, the Hustlin' Owls never looked back and took the second game by 6 points (30-24) and went into the ten minute break with the commanding 2 games-to-none lead.
In the third and final game, Corban came out firing on all cylinders as junior Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) guided the Warriors to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to her serving ability. An Oregon Tech service error and a kill by freshman Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) handed Corban a 5-1 lead and forced the Hustlin' Owls to call an earlier timeout. Following the break in action, Oregon Tech went on a 11-7 run to tie the game at 12-all and then extended its lead to as many as 5 (27-22) before Corban attempted one final comeback. The Warriors scored three straight points thanks to a kill by Hofferd and a pair of Oregon Tech attack errors to get within two (27-25), but could not hold off the offensive fire power of the Hustlin' Owls. Before OIT ended the game and match, McGraw put one final Corban point on the board via a kill, but Oregon Tech's Anna Leal ended the match with a kill and gave the Hustlin' Owls the 3-point win (30-27) and the three-game sweep.
Along with Reeher and McGraw, Hofferd added 10 kills and Lange 6. Thompson guided Corban's offense with a team-high 37 assists, while Horn anchored the Warriors' back line with a team-high 21 digs.
Oregon Tech was led by Wooley's match-high 21 kills, while Albertson recorded a triple-double thanks to 10 kills, a match-high 38 assists, and 11 digs. Krystie Vea provided the defense for the Hustlin' Owls with a match-high 24 digs from her libero position, while Wooley added 21 and Maggie Roberts 19.
Corban is now 7-17 overall, 4-13 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech improves to 18-7 overall, 11-5 in CCC action. The Warriors will conclude its regular season next Friday, November 3rd, versus the Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
NOTE: During the 10-minute break in between Game #2 & #3, Corban will be honoring its three graduating seniors -- Hallie Hofferd, Nina Clanton, and Becky Horn -- for their outstanding play while donning the navy and gold.
