Hofferd paces Warriors in loss to Red Raiders of SOU

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Hallie Hofferd (Bend, Ore.) paced the Warriors with 13 kills, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team dropped fell in four games (30-27, 15-30, 15-30, 19-30) to nationally-ranked Southern Oregon on Friday.
The Warriors came out of the shoot with guns a-blazin' as they jumped out to a 14-6 lead following a kill by sophomore Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore). Southern Oregon came back to tie the game at 18-all and 19-all before taking its first lead at 20-19 thanks to a Corban service error. There were four more ties before the Warriors to the lead for good at 25-24 via a Raider attack error. Senior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Hofferd led Corban to the Game #1 victory thanks to a combined three kills (2 for Hofferd and 1 for Clanton), as the Warriors took the opening game by 3 points (30-27).
Over the next two games, Corban recorded negative hitting percentages as they combined for 14 kills and 18 attack errors. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon registered 15 and 18 kills respectively, while registering a mere 9 attack errors and took the middle two games by identical scores of 30-15.
In the fourth and final game, both teams battled in the beginning, as Corban got as close as 2 points at 12-10 via a Clanton kill. Unfortunately, the Warriors could not maintain the offensive firepower, as their nationally-ranked opponents let them as close as 2 points (18-16) following a service ace by senior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.). The Raiders outscored the Warriors, 12-2, over the final fourteen points to take the game by 11 (30-19) and the match in four games.
Along with Hofferd, Reeher added 9 kills and junior Ashley Lange (Salem, Ore.) chipped in with 7. Freshman setter Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) handed out a match-high 31 assists, while Horn provided the defense with a match-high 22 digs.
Southern Oregon was led by Mia Wortel's match-high 19 kills, while Shanna Claflin and Richelle Millsap added 13 and 11 respectively. Molly Grossman guided the Raiders' offense with a team-high 28 assists, while Katie Pluchos anchored Southern Oregon's back line with a team-high 20 digs.
Corban is now 7-16 overall, 4-12 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 15-5 overall, 13-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to action tomorrow night, October 28th, when they go head-to-head with the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Institute of Technology beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
