PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) broke the single-season digs record with a match-high 30, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell in four games (30-24, 22-30, 29-31, 23-30) to the Knights of Warner Pacific on Friday.
Last weekend, Horn recorded an early dig during the second rally against Eastern Oregon to give her 1,000 career digs in just two seasons. Tonight, the 5-foot-6 defensive specialist added yet another record to her resume when she broke a two-year old record that was set by former Warrior Jamie Ruda (2001-04).
Coming into tonight's match versus the Knights, Horn needed a mere two digs to surpass Ruda's record of 532 digs. Earlier on in the opening game, the Reynolds High School graduate surpassed Ruda with her 533rd dig this season.
Despite the accomplishment by Horn, Corban did not have much else to cheer about as the host Knights of Warner Pacific defeated the Warriors for the first-time ever. Prior to tonight, the two teams had squared off 21 times with Corban coming away on the winning side each and every time. On this particular night, match #22 was the lucky one for the Knights, as they registered 59 kills on 188 attempts (.191 hitting percentage) compared to Corban's 48 kills on 190 attempts.
Corban took the opening game by 6 points (30-24) thanks to committing a mere three hitting errors, while Warner Pacific committed seven attack errors. Unfortunately, the Warriors managed only 25 combined kills with 19 attack errors over the final three games compared to Warner Pacific's combined 46 kills with only 18 hitting errors.
For the Warriors, senior Hallie Hofferd (Bend, Ore.) led the team with 17 kills, while sophomores Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) and Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) added 15 and 8 respectively. Freshman setter Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) handed out a career and season-high 42 assists, while recording her third career double-double with 18 digs.
As a team, Corban recorded 100 digs with Horn leading the way, while Thompson, junior Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.), McGraw, and Hofferd aided the cause with 18, 17, 12, and 11 respectively. McGraw also led the Warriors with 5 blocks (1 solo, 4 assist), while Hofferd added 4 assist blocks as part of Corban's 12 combined team blocks.
Warner Pacific was led by Michelle Allen's match-high 24 kills, while Amy Rispler and Marcy Oakland added 12 and 10 respectively. Tara Andrews guided the Knights' offense with a match-high 45 assists, while Allen anchored Warner Pacific's back line with a team-high 20 digs.
Corban is now 6-15 overall, 3-11 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific evens its overall record at 9-9, 6-7 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the court on Saturday, October 21st, when they go head-to-head with the Thunderbirds of Cascade beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Portland. This will be the Warriors' final road match of the season before returning to the lovely confines of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center for its final three matches of the regular season.
