BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) led Corban’s women’s volleyball team to their second straight win thanks to a match-high 14 kills, as Corban defeated Cascade, 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-19), on Saturday evening.
Despite being down at the beginning of the first two games and having to scratch their way back, Corban knew what they needed to do and stepped up to the task en route to the 3-game sweep of the visiting Thunderbirds.
In game one, the Warriors found themselves quickly down by 7 points (10-3), and did not take a lead until the 47th point (24-23) following an attack error by Cascade. Over the final 10 points, Corban used 3 kills and a service ace from senior Katie Lewin (Keizer, Ore.) and took the first game by 3 points, 30-27.
In game two, Corban was once again down early, as Cascade used timely serving from Tiffany Hornbeck and grabbed a slim 2-point lead (4-2). This time, Corban quickly rebounded and seized the lead for good at 6-5 following a block by Clanton and sophomore Ashley Lange (Salem, Ore.). The game was tied at 11-all and 15-all, but Corban pulled away after a 5-0 run capped by a service ace from junior Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) and seized the 2-game lead by another score of 30-27.
In the third and final game, Corban had a sizeable 9-point lead (17-8) before a five-minute stoppage in play due to a recording error, which allowed Cascade to regroup and go on a 6-0 run to get within 3 points (17-14). Following an attack error by Cascade, Corban outscored the visiting Thunderbirds by 8 points (13-8) over the final 22 points and took the match in three games.
Along with Clanton (#2 - pictured right), Lewin and freshman Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) chipped in with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Senior setter Ashley Walbridge (Troutdale, Ore.) guided the Warriors’ offense racking up a match-high 36 assists and recording her second straight double-double with 13 digs.
After a slow start, Horn regrouped to anchor Corban’s back line with a match-high 17 digs, which gives her 408 total on the season and moves her a mere 5 digs away from the top 5 for digs in a single season.
Jennifer Braceros and Kelsey Killen led Cascade with a team-high 10 kills each, while Braceros anchored the Thunderbirds’ back line with a team-high 11 digs. Hornbeck handed out a team-high 29 assists for Cascade.
With the win, Corban improves to 6-11 overall, 6-7 in Cascade Collegiate play. Cascade falls to 2-14 overall, 1-12 in Cascade Collegiate play. The Warriors are next in action on Friday, October 21st, when they travel north to Portland for a match up with the Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at 7:00 p.m.
