Warriors play deja vu with Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon

October 8, 2005

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In just her second match of the season, senior Katie Lewin (Keizer, Ore.) recorded a season and team-high 19 kills, but it was not enough as Corban’s women’s volleyball team dropped their second five-game match this season to Eastern Oregon, 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 28-30, 30-23, 4-15), on Saturday night.

Earlier this season, these same two teams met and the visiting Mountaineers handed the Warriors a heart-breaking 5-game loss in Corban’s home opener.

Along with Lewin, freshman Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.), senior Bailey Willcox (Jackson, Wyo.), and junior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) recorded 18, 15, and 13 kills respectively.

Corban recorded a positive hitting percentage in each of the first four games, including a match-high .432 in the fourth game, but in the fifth and final game, the Warriors registered their first negative hitting percentage of the night (-.130).  Through the first four games, the Warriors had recorded a combined 74 kills with 24 attack errors, while in the fifth game Corban reversed their fortunes thanks to 3 kills and 6 attack errors.

Senior setter Ashley Walbridge (Troutdale, Ore.) guided the Warrior attack, as she handed out a season, career, and match-high 63 assists.  Prior to tonight, Walbridge had recorded three straight double-doubles, but could not continue that streak as she registered only 7 digs in the five games.

Junior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) continued her stellar play in Corban’s back line, as she recorded a season, conference, and match-high 41 digs.  Horn, who leads the Warriors in both digs (355) and digs per game (6.12), registered the second highest dig total in a single match, as she fell a mere 3 digs shy of the school record set last season by Jamie Ruda.

Keri Brown led Eastern Oregon with a match-high 22 kills, while Jana Brotherton and Jennifer Luatua recorded 18 and 16 kills respectively.  Jenna Elliott led the Mountaineers with a team-high 57 assists, while Luatua anchored EOU’s back line with a team-high 21 digs.  Six different Mountaineers recorded double-digit dig totals as Eastern Oregon registered a match-high 107 digs as a team.

With the loss, Corban falls to 4-11 overall, 4-7 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Eastern Oregon improves to 5-7 overall, 4-7 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, October 14th, when they host the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 7:00 p.m.
