KIRKLAND, Wash. – Despite double-digit kill totals by seniors Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Hallie Hofferd (Bend, Ore.), Corban's women's volleyball team had its three-match winning streak snapped at the hands of the Eagles of Northwest, 3-1 (23-30, 30-24, 28-30, 27-30), on Friday.
Coming into the match, the Warriors were riding their longest winning streak of the season -- three matches -- but could not hold off the upstart squad of Northwest University. This is the ninth straight loss for Corban versus its opponent from the Evergreen State. The last time that a Warrior team defeated Northwest was on November 16, 2002 when then-Western Baptist defeated the Eagles in four games (30-27, 30-23, 23-30, 30-25).
Despite a combined 18 hitting errors, including a match-low four in the Warriors' game two victory, Corban could not overcome 61 kills by the host Eagles of Northwest.
Along with the senior duo, sophomore Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) chipped in with 10 kills and junior Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) added 9. Corban's setting tandem of sophomore Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) and freshman Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) combined for 44 assists, as each handed out 22. Reigning Cascade Collegiate Conference and NAIA Region I Libero of the Week senior Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) provided the defense for the visiting team, as she registered 17 digs from the back row.
As a team, Corban recorded 54 kills, 62 digs, and 8 blocks with McGraw registering 16 digs and Clanton adding 15 digs and 2 assist blocks.
Northwest was led by Laura Peterson's match-high 16 kills, while Gina Lubanovici and Kara Van Zanten added 12 and 11 respectively. Andrea Cotton guided the Eagles' offense with a match-high 30 assists, while Dayna Casseday anchored Northwest's back line with a match-high 19 digs.
Corban is now 5-12 overall, 2-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Northwest improves to 9-5 overall, 6-4 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to action tomorrow, October 7th, when they continue play in the state of Washington taking on the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Olympia.
