ASHLAND, Ore. – Sophomore Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) recorded a season and match-high 22 kills and fellow sophomore Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) registered her third triple-double of the season, but Corban's women's volleyball team fell in four games (32-30, 26-30, 21-30, 16-30) to the Raiders of Southern Oregon on Saturday.
Reeher tied a career-high in kills today against the Raiders, as she also recorded 22 kills at Oregon Tech last season on September 24th. This is the first time this season that a Warrior has recorded 20-or-more kills in a match.
McGraw notched her third triple-double of the season thanks to 10 kills, a team-high 21 assists, and 10 digs. So far this season, the 5-foot-7 transfer is the only player in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to record a triple-double, as she accomplished the feat versus Willamette and Northwest prior to this afternoon.
In the opening game, Corban took the early lead against its nationally-ranked opponent thanks to a match-high 21 kills. Southern Oregon had 16 kills, but could not overcome 7 attack errors and 2 service errors that led to the slim 2-point margin of victory (32-30) for the Warriors.
The host Raiders fought back in games two and three thanks to a combined 28 kills winning each game -- 30-26 and 30-21, respectively. The Raiders won the final game with ease tallying a score of 30-16 to end the match.
Besides Reeher and McGraw's totals, senior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) and junior Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) pitched in 9 and 7 kills respectively. Seven different Warriors contributed at least one kill, as all eleven available players saw action. McGraw and freshman setter Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) combined for 33 assists (12 coming from the first-year player), while senior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) anchored Corban's back line with a match-high 30 digs.
Southern Oregon had three players in double figures for kills with Mia Wortel leading the way with a season-high 20. Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith and Richelle Millsap each had 13 kills with Hamilton-Smith also adding four service aces. Wortel boosted the team’s defense with seven blocks (5 solo and 2 assist). Emily Stone was another important factor in the defense recording 18 digs, while Isabel Yasana had 13 digs and 27 assists.
Corban is now 2-11 overall, 0-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play. Southern Oregon, which is ranked 32nd in the NAIA, improves to 9-4 overall, 7-1 in CCC action. The Warriors will take a quick one-match break from conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 26th, when they face-off against future CCC member Northwest Christian beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center in Eugene.
