September 17, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Nina Clanton (Hillsboro, Ore.) recorded a match-high 11 kills in leading Corban College to a 3-game sweep (30-18, 30-27, 30-21) over The Evergreen State College on Saturday night in the Warriors’ weekend finale.

Following a tough battle last night with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) No. 12-ranked Northwest, the Warriors came out with vengeance and cruised through the first game, thanks to a hitting percentage of .310.  Corban notched 16 kills, while committing only 3 hitting errors, as they were led by junior Stacey Casebier’s (Medford, Ore.) 5 kills.

In game two, the visiting Geoducks got out to a quick 7-point lead (12-5) before Corban went on a 7-0 run and tied the score at 12-apiece.  From that point on, both teams traded points until junior Hallie McNaughton (Bend, Ore.) stepped behind the service line with Corban trailing by 1 point (27-26).  McNaughton proceeded to serve two aces and the Warriors benefited from two Geoduck hitting errors en route to the 3-point win (30-27).

In the third and final game, Corban seemed in control throughout as they jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead before allowing The Evergreen State College back into the game.  Clanton put the Warriors on her back and thanks to her 5 kills, and a match-high team hitting percentage (.368), Corban pulled out the final game by 9 points (30-21) and walked away with its first home victory of the season.

Overall, freshman Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) and Casebier recorded 10 and 9 kills respectively, while senior setter Ashley Walbridge (Troutdale, Ore.) led Corban with a match-high 33 assists.  Junior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) anchored the Warrior back line, once again, registering a match-high 15 digs, while Walbridge (pictured left) recorded 13 digs of her own.

Mattie Blevens led The Evergreen State College with 10 kills, while Chelsea Jacobson and Elyse Johnston recorded 6 kills each.  Jacobson led the Geoducks with 16 assists, while Kaylene Black anchored Evergreen’s back line with 14 digs.

With the win, Corban improves to 3-7 overall, 3-3 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Evergreen State College falls to 0-5 overall, 0-5 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors are back in action on Friday, September 23rd, when they travel south to Ashland for a match up with the NAIA’s No. 14-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m.
