Davenport & Lange lead Warriors to win over Pioneers

Senior Ashley Lange recorded a season-high 15 kills, as Corban picked up its second win in its past three matches to improve to 2-3 overall this season.

PORTLAND, Ore. – After opening the season in Southern California, Corban's women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the season, 3-1 (28-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-26), thanks to 15 kills each from junior Rashelle Davenport (Kalama, Wash.) and senior Ashley Lange (Salem, Ore.) on Tuesday inside the Pamplin Event Center.
Five different Warriors record double-digit kill totals, while five other players recorded 10-or-more digs in the four-game match.
Along with Davenport and Lange, freshman Kristen Eiler (Salem, Ore.), junior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.), and freshman Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.) registered 13, 12, and 10 kills respectively.
Meanwhile, junior Margo Wyatt (Dufur, Ore.) recorded a season and match-high 29 digs, while Reeher, Davenport, and senior Caylin Bankston (La Grande, Ore.) each had 13 digs in the match.
Corban took the opening point of the match via a kill by sophomore Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.), extended its lead to as much as five points (14-9),and then watched as the host Lewis & Clark climbed back into the game. The host Pioneers knotted the game at 26-all before going on a mini 3-0 run to take a 29-26 lead. Following a kill by Eiler and a block by Davenport, the Warriors fell victim to a kill by Lewis & Clark's Lara Smith that handed the host Pioneers Game #1, 30-28.
In Game #2, Corban tied the game at 3-all before going on a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Lewis & Clark used its own 5-0 run to tie the game at 10-all before Corban went on an 11-3 run to take a 21-13 lead. With a commanding eight point lead, the Warriors had the game in control and rolled to the win, 30-22, to tie the match at a game apiece.
In the third game, the Warriors jumped out a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back and grabbed an eight-point lead on three separate occasions with the final one coming at 28-20. Despite being out-scored 5-2 over the final seven points, Corban used its lead to take a 2-1 lead following a kill from Lange that sealed Game #3, 30-25.
In the fourth and final game, Corban continued its dominance in the beginning as the visiting team jumped out to a six-point lead (10-4) and then allowed the host school a chance to get back in the game via a 9-4 run that resulted in a one-point advantage (15-14) for Lewis & Clark. Both teams battled back and forth over the next 23 points until the game was tied at 26-all. Thanks to a bad set by Lewis & Clark, along with a pair of kills by Lange and a block assist from Braun and Thompson, Corban took the final game, 30-26, and the match in four games.
Along with the quintet's kill totals, Thompson handed out a season and match-high 56 assists for the Warriors. Davenport, Reeher, and Thompson each recorded a double-double, as Davenport and Reeher recorded 10-or-more kills and digs with Thompson adding 10-or-more assists and digs.
Lewis & Clark was led by Katherine Fielder's team-high 11 kills, while Sara Kettler and Cayley Rasmussen added 10 and 9 kills respectively. Smith led the Pioneers with a team-high 37 assists, while Jessamy Holland anchored Lewis & Clark's back row with a team-best 22 digs.
With the win, Corban improves to 2-3 overall, while Lewis & Clark drops to 1-4 on the season. The Warriors are next in action when they begin Cascade Collegiate Conference play against The Evergreen State College on Friday, September 7th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
