CALDWELL, Idaho – In its first match of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent, Corban's women's volleyball team fell in three straight games (17-30, 17-30, 19-30) to the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Lady Coyotes of Albertson College of Idaho on Saturday night.
Senior Hallie Hofferd (Bend, Ore.) paced Corban with a team-high 12 kills, while sophomore Jessica McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) added 10 kills and a team-high 16 assists.
In the first game, the Warriors were up by a point (7-6) before Albertson scored 6 unanswered points to take a 12-7 lead behind four kills by the Lady 'Yotes Katie Hogue. Corban could not get any closer than 3 points (13-10), as Albertson outscored the Warriors by 10 (17-7) and captured the opening game by 13 points (30-17) on a Kristen Henning kill.
In the middle game, Corban tied the frame at 2-all thanks to an Albertson attack error, but surrendered four straight points to fall behind 6-2. The 2005 NAIA national tournament participant watched the Warriors get within a mere point (10-9) before going on runs of 4 and 5 straight points to take the middle game by an identical 13 points (30-17).
In the third and final game, Corban grabbed only its second lead of the match (2-0) following back-to-back Albertson attack errors. The Warriors could not hold the slim lead when Albertson's Katie Zillner registered two straight service aces to go up by a point (3-2). Over the next twelve points, Corban was on the wrong end of a 9-3 run that put the host Lady 'Yotes up 12-5. The Warriors got within four points (12-8), but that was the closest that the team would get for the remainder of the match. Albertson ended the 79-minute match when Ashley Galeai and Aubrey Nielsen blocked Hofferd's final attempt for the 11-point victory (30-19).
Senior libero Becky Horn (Troutdale, Ore.) paced Corban's back line for the sixth straight match with a team-high 17 digs, while McGraw came within a mere dig of posting her first career triple-double.
Albertson was led by Kathryn Ely's match-high 13 kills, while Hogue and Sarah Buhler added 9 each. Erin Cherrington guided the Lady 'Yotes' offense with a match-high 29 assists, while Catherine Everist anchored the Albertson back line with a match-high 20 digs.
Corban is now 1-5 overall, 0-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Albertson captured its third straight win and is now 5-1 overall, 2-0 in CCC play. The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5th, when they host NCAA Division III member and cross-town neighbor Willamette beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
