Warriors drop pair to Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite a combined 5-for-8 performance with 3 runs batted in by senior Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.), Corban’s softball team dropped a conference double header, 4-3 & 8-5, to the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon today at Pioneer Park.
Corban took an early 1-run lead in the 2nd inning when Hiatt led off with her team-leading second home run of the season.
Eastern Oregon quickly took the lead in the 3rd inning via 4 runs on 6 hits capped off by single through the right side by Tara Peerenboom that scored Leanne Foster from from second.
The Warriors attempted a come back in the 5th inning when Hiatt roped a 2-run double into center field that scored sophomores Megan Lamson (Medford, Ore.) and Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.).
Unfortunately for Corban, EOU’s starting pitcher Kelly West closed the door on an eventual come-from-behind win despite the Warriors putting runners at second and third in the final inning with two outs.
Hiatt went the distance for Corban, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 12 hits, while fanning 3 Mountaineer batters. West pitched a complete game for Eastern Oregon and allowed 3 runs (all earned) on 8 hits, while striking out a game-high 4 Warrior hitters.
In the night cap, Eastern Oregon grabbed the early lead, 1-0, via a home run by Meghan Henderson in the 1st inning.
Corban took its only lead of the game in the 3rd inning when hometown sophomore Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored sophomore pinch runner Shelby Raichl (Astoria, Ore.) from third. The next batter – Lamson – reached on an error by EOU’s first baseman that allowed junior Ashley Holder (Fairbanks, Alaska) to score on the error.
Eastern Oregon tied the game at 2-all in the bottom half of the inning when Foster executed a sacrifice bunt that scored Heather Tandberg from third.
In the 5th inning, Eastern Oregon scored 4 runs on 2 hits, including a 3-run home run to left field by Peerenboom that gave the Mountaineers the lead for good and scored Hannah Shelley and Meghan Henderson.
Corban put 3 runs on the board in the 6th inning on 3 hits, as sophomore Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) and senior Andrea Hansen (Canby, Ore.) scored unearned runs and freshman Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) roped an RBI single through the left side.
The Mountaineers put up a pair of insurance runs in their half of the 6th inning on 3 hits, including a 2-out, 2-run double by Henderson.
Freshman pitcher Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) pitched all 6.0 innings for Corban, allowing 8 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits, while striking out a game-high 9 batters.
Eastern Oregon’s starting pitcher Stephanie Baumann pitched a complete game and allowed 5 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, while fanning a quartet of Warrior hitters.
On the afternoon, Hiatt led the Warriors with a 5-for-8 performance, while Santie was 3-for-6 at the plate with 1 runs scored.
Eastern Oregon was led by Henderson’s 5-for-8 performance with 3 runs scored and 3 runs batted in.
With the losses, the Warriors fall to 5-29 overall, 3-15 in CCC play. Eastern Oregon improves to 12-25 overall, 7-11 in CCC action. Corban is next in action Saturday, April 29th, when it travels to Albertson for a conference double header beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
