SALEM, Ore. – On senior recognition day, Corban’s softball team struggled to score runs and dropped a non-conference double header, 2-1 & 3-0, to the Beacons of Northwest Christian on Warrior Field.

Playing in their last twin bill at home, seniors Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.), Monica Crumley (Gold Beach, Ore.), and Andrea Hansen (Canby, Ore.) combined to go 3-for-14 at the plate, as Hiatt led the trio with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate.

In the opener, both teams were locked in a pitching dual between Hiatt and NCC’s Darci Byrne with neither team cracking the run column until the 6th inning.  The visiting Beacons got back-to-back singles from Kathy Richard and Kasey Sconce before Lanea Hyland drew a walk that loaded the bases with one out.  Bethany McCallister knocked in the game’s first run on a ground out to short, giving Northwest Christian a 1-run lead.

In its half of the 6th inning, Corban tied the game at 1-all thanks to a lead off double by sophomore Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) and a bunt single by fellow sophomore Megan Lamson (Medford, Ore.) that advanced Goss to third.  Lamson got herself caught in a pickle and was eventually tagged out by the Beacons’ second baseman, but allowed Goss to score the Warriors’ lone run of the game.

In the 7th inning, Northwest Christian re-took the lead when four straight Beacons recorded singles, capped off by Richard’s RBI base-knock that scored Lisa Martinez for the game-winner and secured a 2-1 victory for NCC.

Hiatt went the distance for Corban, allowing 2 runs (all earned) on 8 hits, while fanning 3 Beacon batters.  Byrne pitched all 7.0 innings for Northwest Christian and allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits, while striking out 5 Warrior hitters.

In the night cap, Northwest Christian rode the arm of sophomore pitcher Megan McLearn who pitched a 2-hit shutout and captured the double header sweep, 3-0.

Hiatt and freshman Becca Shelamer (Central Point, Ore.) recorded the only two hits for the Warriors, as Hiatt was the only player to get past first base when she advanced to third on an error by the Beacons’ right fielder following her base hit in the 5th inning.

Freshman pitcher Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) pitched all 7.0 innings for Corban, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, while striking out a game-high 9 batters.

On the afternoon, Hiatt and Shelamer led the Warriors with 2-for-5 performances each, while four other Corban players registered a hit each.

Northwest Christian was led by Sconce’s 5-for-7 performance, as Martinez registered 2 hits in 7 at-bats with 2 runs scored.

With the losses, the Warriors fall to 5-27 overall, while Northwest Christian improves to 16-12.  Corban is next in action Friday, April 28th, when it travels to Eastern Oregon for a conference double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. in La Grande.
