SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) fanned six batters in the night cap to set a new single-season school record in strikeouts and the Warriors pounded out 11 hits in the first game, but the NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Clan of Simon Fraser had two much fire-power in sweeping Corban’s softball team, 14-4 & 8-1, at Warrior Field.

Opening the second game, Sailors tied the Corban record for strikeouts (65) held by fellow teammate Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.) with two straight to close out the top-half of the first inning, then toppled the mark by fanning the very next Clan batter she faced opening the 2nd inning. Sailors’ six strikeouts on the day now give her a total of 69, with six games left to play.  The rookie right-hander also moves into 2nd all-time on the career strikeout chart.

After Simon Fraser opened an 8-1 lead in the first game, the Warriors scored three in the 4th when sophomore Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) singled home a run and Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) followed with a two-run base-hit to right field, closing the gap to 8-4.

The Clan put the game out of reach, as Erin Gee blasted a 2-run homer in the 5th and Christine Barr added a 2-run single to highlight a 4-run 7th inning for Simon Fraser.

Hiatt was 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the first, and Santie finished a perfect 2-for-2 with her two RBIs. Batey scored twice to go along with her hit and run-batted-in, while senior Monica Crumley (Gold Beach, Ore.) had two hits and registered nine putouts defensively for the Warriors in the opener.

Simon Fraser’s Melanie Matthews was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Gee finished the opener 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Matthews and Gee collected six hits each on the day, and Gee racked up six RBIs over the double header.

The Clan’s Jennifer Schreyer fired a 1-hitter with four strikeouts to insure the victory in the final contest.  The junior hurler didn’t give up a hit until Batey singled with two outs in the 6th inning.

Gee and Becky Hartley each had three hits and three RBIs in the second game for the winners.

Corban scored its lone run in the second when Hiatt walked.  After sophomore pinch runner Shelby Raichl (Astoria, Ore.) replaced Hiatt at first, the swift-footed utility player advanced on a wild pitch, moved to third on a Santie ground out, and scored on an error in right field.

With the losses, the Warriors fall to 5-25 overall, while Simon Fraser improves to 21-1.  Corban is next in action Tuesday, April 25th, when it hosts Northwest Christian in a non-conference double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Warrior Field to close out the 2006 home season. Pre-game ceremonies will honor Corban’s three seniors – Hiatt, Crumley, and Andrea Hansen (Canby, Ore.) – for their service with the softball team, as they don the navy and gold for the final time at home.
