April 21, 2006

Senior Rachel Hiatt pitched a complete game in the opener and then cracked her 1st home run of the season in the night cap against the Cavaliers of Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite a combined 3-for-6 performance with 2 runs batted by senior Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.), Corban’s softball team dropped back-to-back conference games to the Cavaliers of Concordia, 8-0 & 4-3, at Delta Park.

Game #1 – Concordia 8, Corban 0

Hiatt, sophomore Megan Lamson (Medford, Ore.), sophomore Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.), and sophomore Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) registered all of Corban’s hits in the opener, as the Warriors fell to the Cavaliers of Concordia, 8-0.

Annele Huckins pitched a complete game 5-hit shutout for Concordia, as she baffled Corban’s hitters all day en route to securing her team-leading 13th win of the season.

Hiatt led the Warriors with 2 hits in 3 at-bats, while the sophomore trio recorded a hit each.  All five hits that Corban managed to were singles, as the Warriors put seven base runners on via either a hit or a walk.

Concordia scored three runs in the 1st inning, two in the 4th, and three in the 6th en route to ending the game with 1 out in the final stanza due to the 8-run mercy rule.

Hiatt went the full 5 1/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits, while striking out 4 Cavalier batters.

Game #2 – Concordia 4, Corban 3

In the night cap, Concordia struck for all 4 of its runs in the first three innings and then held Corban at bay in order to secure a tight 4-3 victory.

After falling behind 3-0 after two innings, the Warriors got a lone run in the 3rd inning when Hiatt cracked her 1st home run of the season.

Two innings later, Corban got another single run thanks to an RBI one-bagger from Batey that scored Lamson from second and cut the Concordia led to two runs at 4-2.

In its last at-bat, Corban attempted a come back and knocked Concordia’s starting pitcher Kristin Donohue out of the game following a sacrifice fly from Hiatt that scored Batey.  Huckins came in following a hit by pitch to Santie and ended the Warriors’ threat via a strikeout.

Freshman starter Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) went the distance for Corban, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, while striking out 6 Cavalier hitters.  Over the past two games, the freshman right-hander has fanned a combined 16 batters and moves just three “Ks” away from setting the single season record for strikeouts.

Concordia’s Donohue pitched the first 6 2/3 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits before handing the ball over the Huckins for the final out.

On the afternoon, Hiatt went a combined 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored, while Batey was 3-for-5 with 1 run scored and an RBI.  Lamson collected a hit in each game, while freshman Becca Shelamer (Central Point, Ore.) was a perfect 2-for-2 in the night cap.

Concordia was led by Brynn Ludwig, who went a combined 4-for-6 with 3 runs scored and an RBI, while Denise Benedict was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the opener.

Corban is now 5-23 overall, 3-13 in conference.  Concordia improves to 20-18 overall, 8-5 in CCC play.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, April 22nd, when they host the NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Simon Fraser in a double header beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
