SALEM, Ore. -
Sophomore Rachel Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) made her return from the injured reserve list on Friday and went a combined 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, as Corban's softball team dropped a non-conference twin bill to Simon Fraser, 25-8 & 14-2.
In the opener, the visiting Clan scored three runs in the first inning before Corban tied the game with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the stanza.
Sophomore Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) opened the inning with walk, marking the first base runner that the Warriors got against SFU pitcher Jennifer Schreyer this season. One batter later, freshman Siriana Guest (Salem, Ore.) was hit by a pitch before junior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) singled to left field allowing everyone to advance one base. Junior Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) then singled the left field, scoring both Gaylord and Guest. One batter later, freshman Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) reached on a throwing error by Simon Fraser's first baseman, which allowed Batey to score from second.
Despite another three-spot on the board in the second inning by Simon Fraser, Corban continued to apply the pressure to the nation's No. 3-ranked team. Guest notched her third home run of the season -- a two-run shot to left field -- that scored Gaylord, who reached via a throwing error by SFU's pitcher.
Over the final three innings, Simon Fraser's offensive fire power got to Corban's pitching, as the Clan scored 19 runs over the span.
Corban's sophomore starter Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) pitched the first 4.1 innings in the circle for the Warriors and struck out one Clan batter before handing the ball over to junior reliever Kelley Seaton (Salem, Ore.) for the final out.
Simon Fraser's Becky Hartley went a perfect 6-for-6 with 3 home runs, 5 runs scored, and 9 runs batted in, while Erin McLean added a 5-for-6 performance with a pair of home runs, 4 runs scored, and 6 runs batter in. Schreyer picked up the win, as the right-hander were 2.0 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits before handing the ball over to Jennifer Van Egdom for the final three innings.
In the night cap, Simon Fraser scored runs in four of the first five innings with Corban getting on the board in the third inning when Seaton was walked with the bases loaded.
Trailing by seven runs (8-1), Steigleman opened the inning with a walk before advancing to third via passed ball and a single by freshman pinch hitter Jennifer Hansen (Canby, Ore.). The next batter -- Santie -- singled to second base, allowing Steigleman to score from third for the Warriors' second run of the game.
Seaton, who started in the circle for the Warriors, went the distance for Corban and struck out a pair of Clan batters to go along with her second inning RBI.
For Simon Fraser, Hartley and McLean turned in identical 4-for-5 performances with a combined 4 runs scored and 6 runs batted in.
On the afternoon, Steigleman led the Warriors' offense with a combined 2-for-4 performance with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, while Batey, Santie, and Guest registered a pair of hits each.
Corban falls to 3-25-1 overall, while Simon Fraser improves to 11-0 overall. The Warriors return to the field tomorrow -- Saturday, April 7th -- in a non-conference double header against future CCC member and rival Northwest Christian beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Eugene.
