Kollaer & Guest lead Warriors against D-II Crusaders

NAMPA, Idaho – Sophomore Siriana Guest (Salem, Ore.) and freshman Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) each recorded a pair of hits in the night cap, as Corban's softball team dropped a doubleheader Monday with the Crusaders of NCAA Division II member Northwest Nazarene, 3-1 & 11-8, at Halle Field.

The visiting Warriors have played six games in the past three days ending their trip to Eastern Oregon and the state of Idaho against Northwest Nazarene, who are in its fifth year of existence as a program.

Game #1 - Northwest Nazarene 3, Corban 1

In today's opener, Corban got a game-high six hits including the visiting team's lone extra base hit via a double by Guest.

Northwest Nazarene put single runs on the board in the first, third, and fifth inning as Haley Hevern and Kate Free recorded RBI hits.

Corban's lone run of the opener came in the top of the third inning, as Guest led off with a double down the left field line before advancing to third via a wild pitch. The very next batter -- junior Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) -- brought Guest home with a single down the left field line to knot the game at 1-all.

The eventual game-winning run came for the host Crusaders in the bottom half of the third, as Rachel Bare aided her own pitching cause by scoring from third via a throwing error by the Warriors' catcher.

In the circle for Corban, junior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) went the distance allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out a game-high six Crusader batters.

Offensively for Northwest Nazarene, four different players registered a hit each while Bare went the distance in the circle for the Crusaders giving up one earned run on six hits to go along with five strikeouts.

Game #2 - Northwest Nazarene 11, Corban 8

In the night cap, Northwest Nazarene put 11 runs on the board via 10 hits that included two-hit performances by Jael Henthorn, Free, and Cortnee Crane.

Meanwhile for Corban, Guest registered a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs to go along with Kollaer's 2-for-4 performance with a pair of RBIs.

Corban took the lead (1-0) in the top of the second inning, as senior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) reached base via an error before moving to second on a wild pitch. One batter later, Guest roped a single to left field allowing Batey to score before Guest was thrown out at second attempting to stretch her hit to a double.

NNU scored three runs in the bottom half of the second inning before the visiting Warriors tied the game at 3-all with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.

Senior Jennifer Childers (Winston, Ore.) opened the third frame with a double down the left field line before scoring via an error by the Crusaders' second baseman. Gaylord, who reached base via NNU's error, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jessica Pierce (Kennewick, Wash.) before scoring via a sacrifice fly by freshman Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) to knot the game heading into the fourth inning.

Northwest Nazarene re-took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, as the host Crusaders scored a single run before both teams exploded for a combined 10 runs in the fifth inning.

In the Warriors' five-run fifth, Kollaer and Guest each registered a pair of RBIs as Kollaer singled to drive in a pair to go along with Guest's two-RBI double to center field. Jones scored Corban's other run via another NNU error by the left fielder.

NNU took the lead for good with its five-run fifth before adding another two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning via a Crane single to left field.

Offensively for the Warriors, Kollaer and Guest were the lone Corban players to register more than one hit as Childers and Gaylord each recorded a hit. In the circle, Kollaer went the distance allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits while fanning a game-high two Crusader batters.

Northwest Nazarene was led by the performances of Henthorn, Free, and Crane. Meanwhile, Dana Shipley took the ball to open for the Crusaders going to the first 4.2 inning allowing eight runs (three earned) on four hits before handing the ball over to Bare for the game's final 2.1 innings.

With the losses, Corban falls to 4-11 overall, while Northwest Nazarene improves to 4-26 overall. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Friday, March 28th, when Corban host its home opener against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
