SALEM, Ore. -
Corban's softball team ended Albertson's five game winning streak on Saturday behind sophomore Erin Sailors' (Anchorage, Alaska) 13 strikeouts in the opening win and junior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) launched her team-best fourth home run of the season in the nightcap as the teams split, 6-5 and 1-7.
With the opening 2007 Cascade Collegiate Conference season split, the Warriors' record stands at 1-1, 3-12-1 overall. Likewise, the 'Yotes begin the conference season at 1-1, while their overall record moves to 13-7.
Game #1 - Corban 6, Albertson 5
Batey helped the Warriors get on the board early as she recorded her team-leading eighth RBI of the season in the first inning by knocking home sophomore Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) on a single to the left field.
The 'Yotes stole the lead away in the top of the fourth inning after scoring two runs, but Corban's junior Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) sparked a four-run fifth inning with a single down the left field line that drove in both Gaylord and freshman Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.). Moments later, Sailors concluded the inning's rally with a two RBI single up the middle that freed up Megan Lamson (Medford, Ore.) and Santie to cross home plate.
Corban tallied their final run of the game in the sixth inning when Batey grabbed her second RBI of the contest with a single to the third baseman that allowed Gaylord to touch home plate for a third time. Albertson attempted a comeback in the closing inning by scoring three runs on two hits, but Emerick threw out the 'Yotes Stephanie Stover at third base for the final out and the win.
Sailors gave up seven hits and five runs (three earned) in the win with her amazing performance in the circle of a Corban College record breaking 13 strikeouts, while Albertson's Chelsey Nokelby gave up four hits, five runs (three earned), and fanned one Warrior batter at the plate. The Warriors got three hits and one run (earned) off Brooke Judy, who replaced Nokelby for the final one and one-third inning.
Game #2 - Albertson 7, Corban 1
The right fielder for the visiting squad, Stacy Smith, revealed her team's displeasure with the earlier encounter by unloading a three-run home run over the right field fence in Albertson's four-run first inning. The 'Yotes added a single run in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings to take hold of an insurmountable lead. However, it was not enough to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.
Leading off the bottom of the sixth inning, Batey cracked a solo-home run that would mark the Warriors' only run of the game. Her performance of 1-for-2 from the batter's box was slightly bettered by Gaylord's three hits at four at bats.
Albertson completed their scoring in its final at bat when Kelsi Murdock's ground out to Gaylord brought in pitcher Katie Zillner. Within the circle, Zillner had a remarkable game of an Albertson College of Idaho school record 15 strikeouts. She also gave up four hits, one run (earned), walked three batters, and picked up the win by pitching the entire 7 innings.
Three pitchers entered the circle for the Warriors in the latter of the twin bill. Sailors had the start and was recorded with the loss after pitching one inning, giving up four runs (all earned) on three hits. Junior Kelley Seaton (Salem, Ore.) came on for four innings with a four strikeout and two-run (both earned) on four hits performance. Sophomore Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) concluded the game in the circle for Corban having allowed one run (earned) on two hits. Overall, the Warrior pitchers walked four batters.
Corban returns to Cascade Collegiate Conference action tomorrow -- Saturday, March 24th -- with a 12:00 p.m. double header on Warrior Field against Eastern Oregon University.
