CALDWELL, Idaho – Senior Jennifer Childers (Winston, Ore.) and sophomore Siriana Guest (Salem, Ore.) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the night cap, but Corban's softball team dropped a pair of conference games to the NAIA's No. 18-ranked 'Yotes of The College of Idaho, 10-0 & 6-3, Saturday at Symms Field.
Playing on back-to-back days for the first time since the season-opening tournament in Northern California, the Warriors ran into its nationally-ranked opponent and fell victim to some unfortunate plays that included five wild pitches and six pass balls.
Game #1 - The College of Idaho 10, Corban 0 (5 inns.)
In today's opener, Corban could only muster a mere two hits on a pair of singles by freshman Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) and junior Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.).
Meanwhile, the host 'Yotes amassed 10 runs on 12 hits that included the game's lone extra base hit via a double by Brooke Judy.
C of I's scoring began in the first inning, as the 'Yotes put a single run on the board via a Daniyelle Villyard single to right center that scored Donnae Carrell from third base.
The 'Yotes added a pair of runs in the second inning before putting six runs on the board in the third, while capping the game's scoring with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the circle for Corban, freshman Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) went the distance allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits while striking out three 'Yote batters.
Offensively for The College of Idaho, Carrell went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs. Meanwhile, Katie Zillner went the distance in the circle for the 'Yotes giving up a mere two hits while fanning a game-high 12 Warrior batters.
Game #2 - The College of Idaho 6, Corban 3
In the night cap, the host 'Yotes put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Villyard knocked home Kelsi Murdock via a single to center field. The very next batter -- Haley Butcher -- flew out to center field allowing Zillner to score from third.
Corban put its first runs of the day on the board in the top of the second inning, as Kollaer opened the frame with a double to right field before sophomore Josie Strange (Chehalis, Wash.) singled through the left side allowing Kollaer to advance to third. After Strange stole second and a Warrior out, Childers recorded an infield single to second that allowed Kollaer to score and Strange to move up to third. Guest, who was the very next batter, wasted no time in tying the game at 2-all with a single to right center that allowed Strange to score. Both Childers and Guest moved up one base via a wild pitch before junior Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Childers to score from third and put the Warriors up 3-2.
The College of Idaho quickly tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning via a Carrell double to left center that allowed Kalie Kurdy to score from first.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth inning when C of I put three runs on the board via one hit. The 'Yotes' Stacy Smith put the home team up for good with a home run to left center before Kurdy scored on a pased ball and Stephanie Stover crossed the plate with game's final run via a wild pitch.
Offensively for the Warriors, Kollaer, Childers, and Guest each registered a pair of hits to go along with one-hit performances from Jones, Strange, and sophomore Jessica Pierce (Kennewick, Wash.). In the circle, junior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) went the distance allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while fanning a game-high tying five 'Yote batters.
The College of Idaho was led by Carrell, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to go along with four other C of I players that recorded a hit each. Chelsey Nokleby began the game for the host 'Yotes, going the first 2.0 innings allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits before turning the ball over the Brooke Judy for the game's final 5.0 innings. Judy threw a perfect five innings en route to picking up her fourth victory of the season, while tying Sailors with a game-high five K's.
With the losses, Corban falls to 4-9 overall, 1-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho improves to 11-5 overall, 4-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Monday, March 24th, when Corban goes head-to-head with NCAA Division II member Northwest Nazarene beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Nampa, Idaho.
