Warriors split with NNU thanks to bases loaded walk

SALEM, Ore. - Freshman Siriana Guest (Salem, Ore.) drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Corban's softball team took the opener of its double header with Northwest Nazarene, 7-6, before dropping the night cap, 4-1, at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem on Friday.

Game #1 - Corban 7, Northwest Nazarene 6

Northwest Nazarene began the scoring in the opener in the second inning via a ground out to third base before Corban began its scoring when junior Laura Santie (Seattle, Wash.) drove home a pair of runs with a single in its half of the second stanza.

In the third inning, junior Jennifer Chliders (Winston, Ore.) tripled following a single by fellow junior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.). Freshman Nicole Leupitz (Keizer, Ore.) then drove home Childers for the game's third run before advancing to third on a single by junior Megan Lamson (Medford, Ore.). Santie then knocked home her third run of the game (Leupitz) with another single for the inning's final tally.

Northwest Nazarene got on the board again in the third inning via a home run before pulling within a pair a mere run, 5-4, in the sixth inning when the Crusaders brought home a pair of run via a sacrifice fly and a steal of home.

The visiting Crusaders took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when their lead off hitter got aboard via a walk then stole second and advanced to third thanks to a passed ball. One batter later, Northwest Nazarene knotted the game at 5-all thanks to an error by Corban's pitcher. Following a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt, the Crusaders took a one-run lead (6-5) thanks to an RBI single. Junior reliever Kelley Seaton (Salem, Ore.) got NNU's final batter of the inning out with a strikeout to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Lamson reached on a error by NNU's second baseman before advancing to second thanks to Santie's walk. Seaton then singled to load the bases for sophomore Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.), who reach via another NNU error this time by the Crusaders' short stop that allowed Lamson to score from third and tie the game at 6-6. Guest then came to the plate and drew the game-ending walk that handed the Warriors their second win of the season.

Corban's sophomore starting pitcher Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits, while fanning 6 NNU hitters before turning the ball over to Seaton. The right-hander reliever threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and struck out a pair of Crusader batters en route to picking up the victory.

Santie and Childers ended the game with a pair of hits each, while Santie knocked home three runs. Both Childers and Leupitz scored twice, while Batey, Lamson, and Santie recorded Corban's other runs.

Game #2 - Northwest Nazarene 4, Corban 1

In the night cap, Northwest Nazarene held the Warriors' offense to a mere two hits, as Batey notched her team-leading third home run of the season in the first inning. Leupitz recorded Corban's next hit (a double) in seventh and final inning.

Seaton started the second game, pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, before giving way to sophomore Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.). Sisler remained in the circle for 2.0 scoreless innings of work, allowing a mere hit before turning the ball over to Sailors for the final inning.

With the split, Corban is now 2-8-1 overall, while Northwest Nazarene is 1-10 overall. Corban will be in action next on Saturday, March 17th, when the Warriors continue their run of home games against NCAA Division III member Pacific (Ore.) beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Field #1 at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem.
