Batey goes batty in loss to Pioneers of Pacific University

Sophomore Lindsay Batey drove in Corban's only runs of the afternoon, as she went 2-for-4 to lead the Warriors.

NEWBERG, Ore. – Sophomore Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) turned in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with 2 runs batted in, but it was not enough as Corban’s softball team fell to Pacific (Ore.), 5-2, in its second game at the Capitol Cup Softball Tournament played at Morse Field on the campus of George Fox University.

Pacific got things started over the first two innings when Caitlin Mastenbroek scored on an Amy Walters single to left field in the 1st inning.  The Pioneers plated three more runs in the 2nd inning when Katy Garcia scored an unearned run and Mastenbroek knocked home two teammates with a single to right field.

Corban (0-2 overall) put a run on the board in the 3rd inning when Batey singled to center field, which plated junior Ashley Holder (Fairbanks, Alaska) for the Warriors’ first run.

Pacific (2-1 overall) added their final run in the 4th inning when Kristin Croxford singled up the middle scoring pinch runner Shannon Janes.

Sophomore Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) led off the 5th inning with a double to right field before Batey registered her 2nd run batted in of the afternoon via a single to left field.

Freshman starting pitcher Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) took the loss for the Warriors, as she threw the first 2.0 innings and gave up 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits.  Senior Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.) came in for the final 4.0 innings and allowed 1 run (1 earned) on 4 hits, while striking out 3 Pioneers.

Andrea Bansen started for Pacific and went 3.1 innings, giving up 1 run (1 earned) on 8 hits, while recording a game-high 6 strikeouts.  Caitlyn Chewning pitched the final 3.2 innings to record the win, while giving up 1 run (1 earned) on 2 hits and recorded 3 strikeouts.

Corban returns to action on Sunday, February 26th, when they finish the Capitol Cup Softball Tournament with two games versus Northwest Christian at 11:30 a.m. and tournament co-host Willamette at 2:00 p.m.  Both games will be played at Willamette Field in Salem.
