Senior Rachel Hiatt went 1-for-2 at the plate, while pitching 4 innings and allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits.

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox's Jill Lacey singled home Kelly Garvin with two out in the bottom of the 7th inning, capping a four-run rally as the George Fox University Bruins stunned the Corban College Warriors, 6-5, in their first game of the Capitol Cup Classic softball tournament, hosted by Willamette University, Friday afternoon at GFU’s Morse Field.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the 1st as Katie Plumb homered to left off Warrior senior starter Rachel Hiatt (Sublimity, Ore.).  Corban went ahead with two runs in the top of 3rd as sophomore Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) and senior Monica Crumley (Gold Beach, Ore.) led off with walks off Bruin hurler Michelle Roberts and came around to score on a pair of errors.  The Bruins’ Cassie Halvorson singled with one out and eventually scored on a Corban error to knot the game 2-2 in the last of the 3rd.

Corban exploded for three runs in the top of the 6th to take apparent control.  Sophomore Caylin Goss (La Grande, Ore.) led off with a triple, freshman Jordan Walker (Stayton, Ore.) walked, and Batey delivered the tie-breaking run with a grounder to second.  Crumley doubled, sending Walker to third, and sophomore Laura Santie (Seattle,. Wash.) singled in Walker.  Crumley later scored on a passed ball.

The Bruins began the winning rally in the 7th off freshman reliever Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) with a Halvorson lead-off single.  Hollee Braun and Meaghan Barr walked with one out, loading the bases, and Plumb singled in two that cut the deficit to 5-4.  Both Plumb and Barr advanced on the throw to the plate, and Barr scored the tying run on Garvin’s single to right.  Plumb was cut down at the plate trying to score the winning run, but Garvin hustled around to third on the play, from where she easily scored the winning run on Lacey’s hit to right.

Roberts (1-1) went the distance for the Bruins, scattering nine hits and allowing only two earned runs.  She walked seven but fanned nine.  Sailors (0-1) suffered the setback.  Crumley was 3-3 for the Warriors in their season opener, while Halvorson, Plumb and Garvin had two hits apiece for the Bruins, who are now 1-2.

Corban opens the season 0-1 and will return to action on Saturday, February 25th, when they sqaure off against Pacific University beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Newberg.
