SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After going through 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, Corban's men's soccer team was forced into a shoot-out to decide the winner of its game at the NAIA Region I Tournament. Unfortunately, the Warriors fell, 5-3, to the Cavs of Concordia to end their season on Friday.
In the first three minutes, the Warriors had ample opportunities to score when junior forward Joshua Crain (Olympia, Wash.) received a pass from senior forward Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.) in the second minute, but could not convert from three yards out.
Just over a minute later, Crain had a breakaway only to have the ball squirt too far ahead and into the awaiting arms of Concordia's goalkeeper.
In the fourth minute, junior midfielder Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.) had another breakaway only to have the ball get ahead of him on the SprintTurf field at Westminster College.
"We were playing a new formation," said first-year head coach Dave Irby. "As a team, we decided to play with three forwards rather than our normal 4-4-2 formation. In the opening minutes, it seemed to work. We just could not capitalize on our opporunities."
Freshman goalkeeper Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.) made a game-high 5 saves, including a pair of key second half denials that kept the game scoreless.
Following a pair of sudden-death overtime periods, Corban and Concordia had to go to penalty kicks in order to decide the winner. Over the first six shots, each team traded goals with Marshall, sophomore midfielder Fernando Karczeski (Curitiba, Brazil), and Crain netting the three Corban goals. Down by a single score as Concordia made its fourth kick, Corban's sophomore midfielder Mark Schubert (Yakima, Wash.) stepped up with a chance to knot the PKs at 4-all. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Concordia's net-minder denied the first-year transfer from The Master's College. Knowing that another goal would end the game, Concordia netted the game-winning penalty kick and ended Corban's season.
The Warriors conclude the 2006 season with an overall record of 9-7-3, while Concordia is now 11-5-3 and advances to the NAIA Region I Championship game against the winner of the Albertson-Westminster game.
