SALEM, Ore. – On "Senior Recognition Day," a trio of seniors -- Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.), Kevin Furman (Chandler, Ariz.), and Aaron Conger (Fairbanks, Alaska) -- scored goals, as Corban's men's soccer team capped its home schedule with a 6-1 victory over the Eagles of Northwest on Thursday.
Despite allowing Northwest the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Chad Thornton, the Warriors rebounded with vengence and scored six unanswered goals to capture their second straight game. With the victory, Corban still has a chance to qualify as the fourth and final team in the NAIA Region I Tournament in early November.
Marshall began the scoring for the Warriors in the 5th minute when he teamed with juniors Quinn Neely (Nelson, New Zealand) and Joshua Crain (Olympia, Wash.). Crain began the play by throwing the ball into Neely, who headed it back to the waiting Marshall for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Just over eight minutes later, junior Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Crain. Crain sent a long pass onto a streaking Louvier, who gathered the ball and went one-on-one with Northwest's keeper before beating him with a shot into the lower left corner for his 10th goal of the season.
Sophomore Fernando Karczeski (Curitiba, Brazil) capped Corban's first half scoring when he stole an attempted clear from Northwest's net-minder before beating him to the far left post for his 5th goal of the season and third in the past two games.
In a first half that was dominated by the host Warriors, Corban held the advantage in shots (11-5) and corner kicks (1-0), while tying in shots on goal (4-4).
Marshall scored his second goal of the game in the 66th minute off an assist from Louvier via a through ball. Louvier sent a pass through a host of Eagle defenders onto Marshall, who was running down the middle. Marshall gathered the ball, took three dribbles, and beat Northwest's keeper to the right side for his 12th goal of the season and final tally of his career on Warrior Field.
Furman notched his first goal as a Warrior in the 77th minute when he teamed with Neely and sophomore Tyler Grove (North Marion, Ore.). Grove began the play with a throw-in from the far sideline that found the head of Neely, who flicked it over the defense and onto a streaking Furman. Furman, who was coming down the near sideline, one-touched the ball into the back of the net for Corban's fifth goal of the game.
Conger capped the game's scoring in the 83rd minute when he teamed with sophomore Justin Lucia (Anchorage, Alaska) and Grove. Once again, the play began with a Grove throw-in onto an awaiting Lucia. Lucia calmly collected the ball before depositing it onto the foot of Conger, who flicked the ball up over the out-stretch arm of Northwest's goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.
Senior defender James Young (Estacada, Ore.), who was playing in his 75th career game for the Warriors, attempted to get into the scoring action making numerous runs from his defensive position over the final five minutes. Unfortunately for Young and the encouraging crowd, the senior could not notch a goal in the final game of his career on Warrior Field.
Corban's sophomore goalkeeper James DelCastillo (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded a game-high 9 saves to pick up his 3rd collegiate victory. Meanwhile, Northwest started Kyle Wall between the pipes for the first 74 minutes before giving way to Brian Swanson for the final 16 minutes. The duo combined for 3 saves with Wall recording all of them.
Corban heads into its last game of the regular season with an overall record of 8-7-2, 5-5-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest falls to 6-9-1 overall, 3-7-1 in CCC action. The Warriors conclude their regular season on Saturday, October 28th, when they go head-to-head with the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
