COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Five different players -- sophomore Fernando Karczeski (Curitiba, Brazil), junior Joshua Crain (Olympia, Wash.), senior Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.), sophomore Daniel Steffen (Oregon City, Ore.), and senior James Young (Estacada, Ore.) -- scored at least one goal each, as Corban's men's soccer team defeated Walla Walla, 7-0, on Saturday.
The Warriors took a mini-one game break from Cascade Collegiate Conference action and took on the Wolves of Walla Walla for the first time since the 2003 season. Three seasons ago, then-Western Baptist defeated Walla Walla, 7-1, in the Capitol city.
Under the lights in the state of Washington tonight, Crain began the scoring in the 3rd minute off a combo assist from Karczeski and junior midfielder Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.).
Three minutes later, Karczeski netted a goal via an throw-in from junior midfielder Kevin Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.) for his first of back-to-back goals before hooking up with Louvier in the 16th minute for his 4th goal of the season.
Marshall recorded his team-leading 10th goal of the season ten minutes later on a combo assist from junior Andrew Brown (Madrid, Spain) and senior Aaron Conger (Fairbanks, Alaska). Brown began the play with a corner kick to Conger at the top of the penalty box, who proceeded to return the ball to Brown. After collecting the pass, Brown lofted a cross towards the back post where Marshall headed home the goal to cap the Warriors' first half scoring.
Crain began Corban's second half scoring with a goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Brown. Brown started the play with a nifty pass to Crain streaking up the middle of the field. Crain took care of business from there, as he weaved in and out of defenders before going 1-on-1 with Walla Walla's keeper and winning the battle for his 7th goal of the season.
Steffan scored his first collegiate goal in the 79th minute unassisted when the sophomore defender made a run down the sideline before firing a shot that the Wolves' net-minder misplayed through his hands and into the back of the net.
Young capped the game's scoring in the 85th minute off an assist from Steffan. Steffan fed Young with a through ball that the senior defender gathered, thought about for a few seconds, and then fired a shot just to the left of Walla Walla's keeper for Corban's seventh and final goal of the game.
Corban's sophomore goalkeeper James DelCastillo (Fairbanks, Alaska) began the game in between the pipes and recorded 3 saves before giving way to freshman Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.) for the final half. Franklin managed to continue the shut out, while registering 4 saves.
Corban evens its record at 7-7-2 overall following two straight losses to conference opponents, while Walla Walla falls to 3-11-1 overall. The Warriors return to Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Thursday, October 28th, when they welcome the Eagles of Northwest beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
NOTE: The men's soccer program will be honoring its four graduating seniors with a halftime ceremony.
