Warriors drop second straight game to Knights of Warner Pacific

October 18, 2005

PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior James Young (Estacada, Ore.) scored his first goal of the season, but it was not enough as Corban’s men’s soccer team fell 4-1 to the Knights of Warner Pacific on Tuesday night.

In a much needed game for the Warriors, Corban suffered their second straight loss at the hands of their hosts from Portland, as these same two teams battled earlier this season in Salem with Warner Pacific walking away with the 1-0 victory.

Last season, Corban came within one Longo point of qualifying for the post-season.  Tonight’s setback does not help their Longo scoring and chances of making the conference playoffs at the end of the month.

Young (pictured right) tallied Corban’s lone goal in the 80th minute following four unanswered Knight goals.  The 5-foot-11 Estacada High School graduate scored an unassisted goal when he collected a rebound off a penalty kick and deposited the ball into the back of the net.

Unfortunately, the goal was too little, too late for Corban thanks to earlier goals by Warner Pacific’s Ross Fagan (12th minute), Aaron Cleveland (23rd minute), Rocky Coates (63rd minute), and Chris Price (64th minute).  J.B. Cunha handed out a game-high 3 assists for the Knights, while Trevor Tharp dished out 2 of his own.

Senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) played the entire game for Corban and recorded 2 saves, while Warner Pacific’s Brandon Mitalis registered a game-high 5 en route to earning his second straight win over the Warriors.

In a physical game that saw 32 fouls called and 4 yellow cards handed out, Corban was outplayed in every other facet of the game, including total shots (22-15) and corner kicks (6-4).  Despite an equal number of shots on goal for each team, the Warriors could not capitalize any earlier and watched their overall record drop to .500 at 7-7-1 and 4-5 in Cascade Collegiate play.

Warner Pacific improves to 7-8-1 overall, 4-5 in Cascade Collegiate play and ties Corban for the 4th and final playoff spot with three games remaining.

The Warriors are next in action on Friday, October 21st, when they host Albertson College of Idaho in the first game of men’s-women’s doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
