Warriors fall in barn burner to Cavaliers of Concordia

October 13, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – Sophomores Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.) and Quinn Neely (Nelson, New Zealand) each scored a goal and handed out an assist, but it was not enough as Corban’s men’s soccer team lost 6-3 to Cascade Collegiate Conference co-leader Concordia on Thursday afternoon.

Concordia began the game scoring two unanswered goals within the first ten minutes before senior Michael Otto (Vianopolis, Brazil) got Corban on the score board via a penalty kick in the 37th minute.

Over the next four minutes, Concordia scored another two unanswered goals, both by Mirzet Sacirovic, and took a 3-goal advantage into halftime.

The visiting Cavaliers scored another goal in the 61st minute when Jonathan Peru took a throw-in from Luis Garcia and headed it to the near post and into the back of the net, giving Concordia an insurmountable 4-goal advantage.

Corban battled back when Louvier scored his 7th goal of the season in the 62nd minute via an assist from Neely.  Neely took a give-and-go pass from Louvier and threaded it through Concordia’s defense onto the soft foot of Louvier, who proceeded to poke the ball past the Cavalier keeper to the far post and into the back of the net.

Nineteen minutes later, the second-year duo traded places when Louvier (pictured right) headed a throw-in from freshman Tyler Grove (North Marion, Ore.) past Concordia’s keeper and onto the waiting head of the tallest player on the field.  The 6-foot-3 Neely quickly flicked the ball into the upper left hand corner for his 1st goal of the season, which brought Corban to within two goals at 5-3.

Concordia answered back less than four minutes later when reserve player Tyler Doty took a through pass from Peru and scooted a shot underneath Corban’s keeper to the far post for the game’s final goal.

Corban senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) played the entire game and recorded 5 saves.  Concordia’s Garrett Staples played the first 86 minutes and recorded 4 saves before giving way to Mike Selmo for the final 4 minutes.

With the loss, Corban falls to 6-6-1 overall, 3-4 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Concordia improves to 8-4-1 overall, 6-1 in Cascade Collegiate play and ties The Evergreen State College for 1st place in the CCC standings.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 15th, when they travel north to Portland for a match up with Cascade beginning at 2:00 p.m.
