Warriors shut out by The Evergreen State College

October 6, 2005

OLYMPIA, Wash. – In the season’s most lopsided game, so far, Corban’s men’s soccer team fell behind early and could never regroup as they were handed a 4-0 loss by The Evergreen State College on Thursday afternoon.

The scoring began in the 6th minute when Evergreen’s Jason Bjorgo took a pass from Kyle Andrews and gave the host Geoducks the early 1-goal advantage.

Trailing by only a goal at halftime, the Warriors needed to step up the intensity in order to come away with the victory and move into a tie for second place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.

Unfortunately the tide turned the other way as Evergreen scored three second half goals, two coming from Nick Mancaruso, and took sole possession of second place in the conference standings.

The Warriors had a golden opportunity handed to them with 16 minutes left in the game when Evergreen was called for a penalty inside the box awarding Corban a penalty kick. Sophomore Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.) was chosen to attempt the kick, but was stopped by Geoduck goalkeeper Sean Oliver securing the shut out.

Senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) played the entire game and recorded a game-high 8 saves despite allowing all four Geoduck goals.

In a very physical game, there were 24 fouls called – 14 for Corban, 10 for Evergreen – and the official handed out three yellow cards and one red card.

With the loss, Corban falls to 5-5-1 overall, 2-3 in Cascade Collegiate play.  Evergreen improves to 8-2-0 overall, 4-1 in Cascade Collegiate play.  The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 8th, when they host Northwest University beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
