BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – It was all decided by a long pass from the goalkeeper and a shot into the lower right hand corner, and Corban College’s men’s soccer team walked away from Warrior Field with a 1-0 loss to Warner Pacific on Tuesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half and back-to-back ties against each other last season, both teams came out with something to prove.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Warner Pacific goalie Brandon Mitalis saved a Warrior shot, sent a clearing ball three-quarters of the field to a wide open J.B. Dunha, who proceeded to dribble one-on-one with Corban’s keeper before firing a low shot into the right hand corner that eluded the diving goalie.
Over the final 31-plus minute, Corban battled and had a golden opportunity when junior Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.) found himself wide-open in front of Mitalis, but was too close and did not have the necessary angle needed to put the ball into the net, nor the options open to set up a teammate.
The Warriors tested Mitalis throughout the game, but the 5-foot-11 junior was up for the task chalking up 10 saves to secure the shutout.
Senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) played the entire game and recorded 4 saves for Corban.
Corban controlled two-out-of-three offensive categories – total shots (18-10) and shots on goal (12-5) – but could not break through the Knight defense and put a goal on the scoreboard.
With the loss, Corban falls to 4-4-1 overall, 1-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate play. Warner Pacific improves to 5-4-1 overall, 2-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate play. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, October 1st, when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho for a 2:00 p.m. match up with Albertson College of Idaho. |
