Warriors fall in final minutes to Humboldt State

September 14, 2005

ARCATA, Calif. – For all of the close competitive dueling, it came down to a last-minute bouncing ball in front of the net and a quick shot by Humboldt State to send Corban College’s men’s soccer team to their second loss of the season, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite playing evenly throughout with the host Lumberjacks, the Warriors could not overcome a goal by Humboldt State’s Kevin Maxwell in the 88th minute on a loose ball in front of the net that Maxwell directed into the center of the goal.

Both teams battled hard for the full ninety minutes with each team recording 13 shots.  Humboldt State gained the slight edge in shots on goal (7-5).  Junior forward Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.), who earlier in the day had been named Cascade Collegiate Conference and NAIA Region I Player of the Week, led the Warriors with 4 shots, while freshman Fernando Carczeki (Curitiba, Brazil) and two other Warriors recorded 3 and 2 shots respectively.

Senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) recorded 6 saves for Corban, while Drew Ryan had 4 saves for Humboldt State.

Every offensive category – shots (13-13), shots on goal (7-5), and corner kicks (4-3) – were close and play was physical, as the close foul totals (19-16) attest.

With the loss, Corban falls to 3-2-1 overall, while Humboldt State improves to 5-4-0.  The Warriors are next in action on Thursday, September 22nd, when they open Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Warrior Field, hosting Cascade College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
