Corban extends win streak to two with victory over Willamette

SALEM, Ore. - Junior forward Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.) and freshman forward Eric Branch (Keizer, Ore.) scored 2 goals each, while sophomore Caleb Louvier (SeaTac, Wash.) scored a goal and handed out 3 assists to lead Corban College to a 5-4 victory over cross town rival Willamette on Saturday afternoon.

Marshall got the scoring started in the 2nd minute when he took a pass from Branch and one touched the ball past Willamette’s keeper for his 7th goal of the season.  In the process, Marshall tied former Warrior Benny Flores for 3rd on the all-time career goals list with 39 and moved past Flores into 3rd on the all-time career points list with 98.

In the 19th minute, Willamette got on the board when Ryan Powers stole the ball from a Warrior defender and sent the ball past Corban’s keeper into the bottom right hand corner, knotting the game at 1-apiece.

Marshall put the Warriors up for good when he scored his 2nd goal of the game on an assist from Louvier.  Louvier proceeded to dribble down the right sideline past numerous Bearcat defenders and then cut back toward the goal and found a diving Marshall streaking down the middle of the field.  Marshall’s goal put him alone in 3rd place on the all-time career goals list with 40.

Corban added to their lead in the 41st minute, as Branch scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from Louvier.  Louvier took the ball deep in Warrior territory and worked his magic, weaving in and out of Bearcat defenders, before finding Branch with a floating pass that seemed to elude every Willamette player that wanted to send it away from the goal.

Willamette got back to within one goal in the 42nd minute, when Reid Bennion rebounded his original shot into the upper corner capping the first half scoring.

Four-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Louvier extended the Warriors’ lead back to two goals when he was fouled inside the penalty box and converted on his first penalty kick of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Branch scored his second goal of the game when Louvier handed out his third assist on another cross into the box that Branch directed into the back of the net.

Willamette fought back over the final 35 minutes and scored twice, including a goal in the 88th minute by Paul Slavik, but it was not enough as Corban controlled the final two minutes and walked away with the victory.
