Warriors comes from behind to beat NCAA DIII Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Junior forward Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.) scored a career-high 4 goals to lead Corban College to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over NCAA Division III member Whitman on Thursday afternoon.

Down 2-0 after the first 32 minutes, Marshall began the scoring for the Warriors in the 41st minute when he took the ball down the left side and unleashed a shot that beat Whitman keeper Brett Axelrod on the left side and brought Corban within one goal.

Less than three minutes later, Marshall tied the game at 2-2 when he rebounded a shot off of the Missionaries’ keeper into the center of the net from 2 yards out capping the scoring for the first half.

Nineteen minutes into the second half, Marshall scored his third goal and recorded the first hat trick of the season on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.

Less than a minute later, Marshall capped the scoring for the Warriors when he took a pass from freshman Eric Branch (Keizer, Ore.) and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for his 6th goal of the season.

So far, in just over two seasons, Marshall has scored 38 goals, handed out 19 assists, and recorded 95 points.  Marshall sits one point and one goal behind current women’s assistant coach Benny Flores for 3rd on the all-time career points and goals list, while being one assist away from 3rd on the all-time career assists chart.

Senior goalkeeper Brett Bentley (Chandler, Ariz.) recorded 7 saves, despite allowing 3 goals, while Whitman’s Axelrod recorded 7 saves, despite allowing 4 goals.

With the win, Corban improves to 2-1-1 overall, while Whitman falls to 1-1 overall.  The Warriors will be next in action on Saturday, September 10th, when they travel down State Street to take on cross town neighbor Willamette beginning at 2:00 p.m. at CBYSC Fields at 5201 State Street in Salem.
