SALEM, Ore. – For the second straight season, Corban's men's soccer team opened the home portion of its schedule with a tie. This time the opponent was NCAA Division III member George Fox and the final score was 2-2 with senior James Young (Estacada, Ore.) and sophomore Tyler Grove (North Marion, Ore.) scoring the Warrior goals.
In the 19th minute, George Fox struck first when Matt Gurlides gathered a rebound off of Corban's freshman goalkeeper Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.) and rifled a shot into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
Down by a goal, Corban's Young gathered a ball at the midfield stripe and lofted a shot from 55 yards out toward the Bruin net. With Grove running onto the ball, George Fox's starting keeper, Kyle Putnam, misplayed the ball and allowed it to role into the goal for the game-tying score in the 39th minute. The goal was Young's second of his career and first goal since October 18th versus conference member Warner Pacific.
Throughout most of the second half, Corban controlled the flow of the offense and in the 77th minute the Warriors were awarded a corner kick. Junior Andrew Brown (Madrid, Spain) struck the corner kick towards the goal and Grove headed home his first goal of the season -- 3rd of his career -- to put Corban up by a goal, 2-1.
With the clock winding down to the last ten minutes of regulation, George Fox's Keith Marshall -- brother of Corban senior Scott Marshall (Bend, Ore.) -- performed a flip throw-in on the far side of the field, over the out-stretched arms of Franklin, and onto the awaiting head of Ryan MacKenzie for the tying goal in the 82nd minute.
Playing in the first overtime game of the season for either team, each team had numerous chances to end the game in both extra periods, but neither team could crack the net therefore ending the game knotted at 2-apiece. This is the second straight meeting between the two institutions that has ended in a tie. In 2001, then-Western Baptist tied George Fox, 5-5, snapping a streak of 13 games in a row that the Bruins had won versus their Capitol city opponent.
Franklin ended his second-ever intercollegiate game with 4 saves, while George Fox's goalkeeping duo of Putnam and Jake Maguire combined for 9 saves.
Corban now finds themselves at 1-2-1 overall, while George Fox is 2-0-1 on the season. The Warriors will be next in action on Tuesday, Sept. 12th, when they travel down Mission Street (Highway 22) to take on NCAA Division III member and cross-town rival Willamette beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Sparks Field.
