Warriors drop final game of 2005 to Cavaliers of Concordia

Senior All-American Eric Fiegi scored his 1,085th career field goal and tied the all-time career NAIA Division II record en route to scoring a game-high 29 points.

PORTLAND, Ore.Senior All-American Eric Fiegi (Medford, Ore.) poured in 29 points and tied the NAIA Division II record for field goals in a career with his 1,085th, but it wasn’t enough as Corban’s men’s basketball team fell to host Concordia, 91-84, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday night.

The Warriors held a 2-point lead at halftime ((41-39), as five different Corban players nailed treys in the first period, led by freshman Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) who hit three straight early. Corban was 7 for 16 from 3-point range in the opening half for a 43.8-percent mark, but the Warriors could manage only 3 more from long range despite 18 tries in the final half.

The Cavs held a slim 2-point lead with just 31 seconds left in the game, before Ernie Rama scored four points and Michael Lay hit two free throws to seal the win.

Concordia outscored Corban 52-43 in the second half behind 66.7% (20-for-30) shooting from the field. The Cavaliers held a big advantage at the free throw line as well, hitting 15-for-20 from the line compared to the Warriors 6-for-13 at the charity stripe.

Fiegi topped his NAIA Division II-leading per-game scoring average (28.6) on a 12-for-20 night from the field, while also hauling in a game-high 14 rebounds for the Warriors.  Fiegi tied Derek Voegel’s NAIA DII record for career field goals made when he connected on his 12th basket of the night in the final two minutes.

Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.), who scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half, was 7-for-15 from the field, while Braun had 11 points and Joel Worcester (Eugene, Ore.) added 10 for Corban. Worcester also handed out 6 assists for the Warriors.

Concordia rode the double-digit scoring of four players, led by Rama’s 21 points coming off the bench. Desmond Meray was next with 18 points, Alex Hartman scored 16 and Lay added 13 for the victors.

With the loss, Corban falls to 7-8, 2-3 in CCC play.  Concordia improves to 10-3 overall, 2-1 in CCC play.  The Warriors are next in action on Friday, January 6th, when they host The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
