Bench provides lift in tough loss to Cavaliers of Concordia

SALEM, Ore. – Corban’s men’s basketball team got a lift from its bench on Friday night, as the Warrior reserves scored a season-high 41 points. Unfortunately it was not enough, as Corban lost to the Cavaliers of Concordia, 105-86.
Sophomore Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored a career-high 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, including 2-for-6 from behind the 3-point line. The 6-foot-3 Linfield College transfer played a season-high 15 minutes, grabbed 3 rebounds, and handed out 1 assist.
All fourteen Corban players saw action for fourth-year head coach Justin Sherwood and 13-out-of-14 scored at least 2 points, as senior All-American Eric Fiegi (Medford, Ore.) led the Warriors with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
Corban watched as the lid was completely blown off the basket in the first half when Concordia shot 26-for-40 (65.0%) from the field, including 4-for-7 (57.1%) from beyond the arc. The lid closed a little bit for the visiting Cavaliers over the final twenty minutes as the team shot 19-for-38 (50.0%), which equaled 57.7% (45-for-78) for the game.
Junior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) and senior Chris Lynn (Kent, Wash.) added 11 and 10 points respectively for the Warriors, while freshman Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) chipped in with 8 points.
The Warriors shot 26-for-68 (38.2%) from the field, including 7-for-33 (21.2%) from behind the 3-point line and a season-high 87.1% (27-for-31) from the free throw line.
Alex Hartman led six Cavaliers in double figures with a game-high 27 points, while Michael Lay added 18 points, a game-high 12 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals for Concordia.
With the loss, Corban falls to 10-12 overall, 5-7 in conference. Concordia improves to 13-9 overall, 4-6 in conference. The Warriors will take a mini-break from conference play on Saturday, January 28th, when they host the Beacons of Northwest Christian beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
