SALEM, Ore. -
Sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) scored a team-high 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team dropped its second game of the season, 80-63, to George Fox in the final game of the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic.
This was the second match up of the season between Corban and George Fox, as the visiting Bruins grabbed a 74-61 victory earlier this season in Newberg.
In the fourth and final game of the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic, George Fox had four different scorers in double figures with Brent Saturn leading the way with a game-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field.
In the opening minute-plus of the game, Douglas missed three straight inside jumpers but came back to shoot 8-for-12 the rest of the way to pace the host Warriors.
Following the unfortunately misses by Douglas, Corban hung with its visiting NCAA Division III counterparts and tied the game on four separate occasions. The final one came at 23-all following a 3-pointer by sophomore Garrett Kauffman (Sweet Home, Ore.) with 4:10 remaining in the opening half. Over the final four-plus minutes, George Fox outscored Corban, 10-5, to take a 5-point lead (33-28) into the locker room.
In the opening minute of the second half, the Warriors got within three points (33-30) thanks to a driving lay-up by sophomore Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.), but could not get any closer. George Fox began pushing its lead further and further away and ballooned to as much as 21 (79-58) following a jumper by Joe Ahn with 2:10 to go in the contest. A jumper by junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) and a 3-pointer by sophomore Michael Craig (Scappoose, Ore.) closed the gap to the final margin of 17 points (80-63).
Along with Douglas, sophomore Jason Klontz (Redmond, Ore.), Braun, and Hill added 9, 8, and 8 points respectively, while Braun grabbed a game-high 6 rebounds (3 offensive, 3 defensive).
As a team, Corban shot 39.3% (22-for-56) from the field, including 16-for-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 29-for-56 (51.8%) from the field, including an identical 16-for-23 (69.6%) from the charity stripe. The two teams combined to shot 9-for-34 (26.5%) from beyond the arc, as Corban connected on a mere three 3-pointers and George Fox made six shots from long distance.
Besides Saturn's game-high, Chris Parker, Phil Heu-Weller, and Brady Strutz added 17, 16, and 10 points respectively as the trio combined to shoot 14-for-24 from the field. Strutz and Mark Metzler pulled down a game-high 6 rebounds each, while Heu-Weller grabbed 5 boards for the Bruins.
With the loss, Corban drops to 1-12 overall, while George Fox improves to 5-4 on the season. The Warriors will take ten days off before returning to Cascade Collegiate Conference action against Eastern Oregon beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
NOTE: Earlier in the evening, Oregon Tech pushes its 2006-07 season opening winning streak to thirteen games thanks to a 60-56 victory over NAIA Division I member Lewis-Clark State to unofficially be crowned the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic champions. OIT's Myles Daley led all players with 15 points off the bench, while two-time NAIA All-American Levell Hesia and transfer Josh Garrett added 11 points apiece. LC-State was led by Teran Lee's team-high 11 points, while Kevin Ochoa poured in 10 points off the bench for the Warriors from Lewiston, Idaho. Oregon Tech's head coach Danny Miles continued to climb the list of all-time winningest head coaches among all divisions, as the 36-year coach grabbed his 801st victory.
