SALEM, Ore. -
In the second game of the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic, freshman and Salem Academy graduate Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) netted a career-high 9 points in 17 minutes, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to Lewis-Clark State, 68-53, on Friday.
This was the second battle of the season between the Warrior teams, as Lewis-Clark State took the opening match up, 74-56, at the Cannon's Building Material Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend.
Tonight, LC-State shot 28-for-58 (48.3%) from the field as they were led by Chris Pitts' game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds. Aiding Pitts' effort was Teran Lee and Napoleon Gordon, who added 14 and 9 points respectively.
The host Warriors attempted to play catch up for most of the night and took their lone lead (17-16) with 10:56 remaining in the opening half when senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) teamed with Potloff for a fast-break lay-up. Potloff began the play with a steal in front of Corban's bench and then led Van Hook with a streaking pass, as the transfer point guard gave Corban a short-lived advantage. Over the final ten-plus minutes of the first half, Lewis-Clark State used a 20-8 run to take a 13-point lead (38-25) into the locker room.
The LC-State Warriors extended their lead to as much as 18 (68-50) with 2:06 left in the contest thanks to a fast-break lay-in by Lee. Potloff capped the game's scoring with a 3-point basket off an assist from sophomore Garrett Kauffman (Sweet Home, Ore.) with 1:50 on the clock. Lewis-Clark State's offense slowed the pace of play down over the final two minutes with Potloff missing Corban's lone attempt in the final minute for the final margin of 15 points (68-53).
Besides Potloff, sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) shot 6-for-14 from the field and scored a team-high 12 points to go along with his team-best 8 rebounds. This is the fourth straight game that the 6-foot-5 transfer from Treasure Valley Community College has scored in double digits since returning from a two-game absence due to a concussion.
Sophomores Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) and Jason Klontz (Redmond, Ore.) added 8 and 7 points respectively, while junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) and Klontz pulled down 6 and 5 boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 35.0% (21-for-60) from the field, including a mere 6-for-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line. The Warriors were a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in the opening half and then were a mere 1-for-2 in the closing half with Kauffman attempting Corban's only free throws in the final twenty minutes.
With the loss, Corban drops to 1-11 overall, while Lewis-Clark State improves to 6-3 on the season. The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, December 9th, when they continue play in the fourth and final game of the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic against NCAA Division III member George Fox beginning at 8:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
NOTE: Earlier in the evening, Oregon Tech remained undefeated in twelve games this season thanks to an 84-73 come-from-behind victory over NCAA Division III member George Fox. Thirty-six year OIT head coach Danny Miles grabbed his 800th career win, as Hustlin' Owl guard Levell Hesia scored a game-high 27 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field as well as adding a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the 3-point line. OIT's Ryan Fiegi and Josh Garrett added 19 and 13 points respectively, while Joshua Wetzler grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds. OIT and Lewis-Clark State will kick off the final night of the Hillyer's Mid-City Ford Classic beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Capitol City.
