LEWISTON, Idaho -
Sophomore Garrett Kauffman (Sweet Home, Ore.) scored a career and team-high 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, but Corban's men's basketball team dropped its second game at the Cannon Building Material Tournament, 80-68, to Montana State University-Northern on Saturday.
Corban, who was the designated home team, jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead after the first three-and-a-half minutes following a field goal by sophomore Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.). The Warriors continued to hold the 10-point advantage (17-7) following a 3-point bucket by Kauffman with 13:05 remaining in the opening half. Corban pushed its lead to as much as 12 (21-9) following a field goal by sophomore Jason Klontz (Redmond, Ore.) and again when sophomore Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) put the Warriors up 23-11 with 8:43 left in the first half. Unfortunately for Corban, MSU-Northern used a 12-0 run over a three minute span to knot the game at 23-all and then out-scored Corban by 4 points over the final five-plus minutes to take a 4-point advantage (34-30) into the locker room.
In the second half, MSU-Northern made eight more field goals than Corban en route to out-scoring the Warriors by 8 points (46-38). Thanks to MSUN's 8-point advantage in the second half, Corban dropped its seventh game of the season by 12 points (80-68).
Along with Kauffman, Braun and senior Nate Morris (Dufur, Ore.) added 12 points each on a combined 10-for-19 shooting from the field. Senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) and Klontz chipped in with 8 and 6 points respectively, while Klontz pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 24-for-58 (41.4%) from the field, including 12-for-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, MSU-Northern shot 34-for-70 (48.6%) from the field, including 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line. Both teams combined to shot 14-for-44 (31.8%) from beyond the 3-point line, as Kauffman paced all the players with a 5-for-9 showing from beyond the arc.
MSU-Northern was led by Ronnie Simpson's game-high 19 points off the bench on 8-for-11 shooting from the field, while Delvaughn Tinned and Durwin Williams added 17 and 16 points respectively. Simpson pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds, while Williams and Erv Sims grabbed 6 boards each.
With the loss, Corban drops to 1-7 overall, while MSU-Northern moves to 5-7 overall. The Warriors return to action on Friday, December 1st, when they tip-off Cascade Collegiate Conference play in Ashland against Southern Oregon University beginning at 7:30 p.m.
