ROSEVILLE, Calif. -
Despite a combined 24 points by sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) and senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.), Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Beacons of Northwest Christian, 76-71 in overtime, in the consolation game of the William Jessup Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
After falling behind by 4 (35-31) after the opening half, Corban came out with vengeance and knotted the game at 64-all when sophomore forward Garrett Kauffman (Sweet Home, Ore.) nailed a 3-point bucket with 9.4 seconds remaining to force the overtime period. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the chance for their first victory got away early in overtime when Northwest Christian came out with four straight points and out-scored Corban by 5 (12-7) in the extra period.
Douglas posted his second straight team-high in points with 13 on 6-for-15 shooting from the field, while Van Hook posted his second double-digit total of the season with 11 from the point guard position.
Sophomore guard/forward Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) rounded out Corban's double-digit scorers with 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field, while sophomore guard Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) and Kauffman added 9 points each.
On the defensive end, Corban forced 17 Northwest Christian turnovers compared to the Warriors' season-low 10. Unfortunately for Corban, the Beacons forced seven second half Warrior turnovers en route to keeping the game close and forcing the extra period.
Northwest Christian was led by Josh Jarrett's game-high 26 points on 11-for-12 shooting from the field and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Jordan Humphries added 16 points on 3-for-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line.
Corban moves its record to 0-3 on the young season, while Northwest Christian improves to 3-2 overall. The Warriors are back in action on Friday, November 17th, when they travel to Newberg for a match-up with NCAA Division III member George Fox beginning at 8:00 p.m. Fifth-year head coach Justin Sherwood will be taking on his former employer once again, as Sherwood was an assistant coach for the Bruins before taking over the helm of the Warriors prior to the 2002-03 season.
